A very enjoyable movie ... if you've read the play. It's sole fault is that, for those who have not studied the work itself, it is completely incomprehensible.

Laurence Olivier is superb, but the whole thing is carried out very dramatically (check the crown). Naturally, the word...( read more)s are no different from the play, but the script was still relatively well handled.

A good one for those studying Shakespeare, but not really for entertainment purposes only.

The acting is great, but the way it is filmed reminds me of one of those cheesy soap operas.

All the actresses are brilliant and the play is well filmed but it would all be for naught if not for Olivier's astounding performance.

It's good. I like Brian Blessed's Lear better.

Shakespeare adapted to film doesn't always work. This does. Sir L. Olivier's performance outshines other movies I've seen him in, and John Hurt as the Fool outperforms many of his other performances.
