Cary Grant, Jack Mullaney, Jayne Mansfield

Cary Grant--the man who defines "movie star"--plays Andy Crewson, a Navy war hero at the tail end of World War II who cons his way into a four-day leave in San Francisco. While a slick PR guy tries ...( read more  read more... )to turn Grant's hero status into a well-paying job, Crewson only has eyes for Gwinnith (Suzy Parker, one of the first supermodels)--who just happens to be the fiancée of a shipbuilding tycoon. Grant is always watchable, but the rest of the movie suffers from an identity crisis; while an aspiring Congressman (Ray Walston, The Apartment) cheerfully admits joined the Navy to further his political career, a buxom young woman (Jayne Mansfield, trying very hard to be Marilyn Monroe) offers herself to everyone in uniform because she sincerely feels it's her patriotic duty. A strange blend of cynical humor and light-hearted romance. --Bret Fetzer

Not a bad film but not that great either. It had the odd funny moment, but not enough to turn this film into anything other than an average movie. I also didn't like Cary Grant's character, which didn't help make the film any more appealing. I found him selfish, rather sexist and...( read more) irrisponsible.
Overall it is watchable, but if you're looking for a great Cary Grant comedy than you're better off looking somewhere else.

A contender for Cary's worst film, leering and unpleasant

Top-notch service comedy. Model Suzy Parker gives a typical wooden performance, yet strangely compelling. Ray Walston before My Favorite Martian.

This movie didn't hold my interest. The problem was they cast the wrong woman as Grant's love interest. Mansfield is hilarious.

The plot is pretty bland and slow moving at times. Jayne Mansfield looks stunning, but this role certainly wasn't the best vehicle to further her career. (And quite honestly, if she didn't appear in the film then I probably would not have sat through it.) Definitely not Cary Gra...( read more)nt's best either.
