Great Aussie flick about a great part of Aussie history. Able to give a deep insight on what it felt like. Good cast and well made.
Well I must say that this film may not be as good as Gallipoli but it does give a rather good outlook to the new generation of Australian film-making. I enjoyed this movie a lot, I found it to be very moving and sad, which is something that most American films lack. I discovered that in this film it more identifies what the men had to face during war, the harsh battlefield conditions and it is all done extremely well. This can be classified as an Australian version of Platoon as that film also examines such harsh conditions during a war. For a first time director Grierson certainly did not hesitate to load it with detail and gore etc, and he makes an extremely moving war movie. During the movie we follow a small squad of Australian soldiers on the Kokoda Trail during WWII; they face the harsh bushlands and heavy terrain in order to make their way back to HQ. Of course they face difficulty with leaving men behind and trying to defend themselves and others. The next part of the movie follows what happens afterwards, what they must endure next to defeat the Japs. There are many things that I picked up when thinking about this movie compared to Weir's classic Gallipoli, the main thing being that Gallipoli focused mainly on the soldiers of the war and what lives they lived before being sent to war and getting their imperfect lives ruined even more, whereas this movie examines in detail what kind of conditions they faced, not so much the bush and heavy terrain but more the fact that men had to be left behind if the rest of the men want to get back to safety, and how hard it is to accept the things that must be done. I am absolutely bewildered that such a low budget movie was able to catch this in such fine detail. This is one of my favourite Australian movies, although it isn't able to beat out Gallipoli it still does better than some other Aussie films like The Lighthorsemen. I can safely say that this will become a classic and will certainly go on to become one of the best films that has come from down under. By watching this movie it makes me proud to be an Aussie. Highly recommended, this is a must see war film!
This was the campaign in which the 'Choccos' proved they could fight as well if not better than the AIF
Aussie Movie
Born from a profound desire to tell the story of the forgotten militiamen of the Australian campaign along the Kokoda track in 1942, the film is inspired by the story of a platoon of the 39th battalion. The story visually describes their extraordinary courage, mateship, endurance and self sacrifice.
