The story begins in Singapore in the year 1883. There a ship embarks for the doomed island to hunt for a sunken boat supposedly filled with pearls. Aboard the expedition ship are a wide variety of characters including the widow of the sunken ship's captain, a diver, two balloonists, a claustrophobic diving bell pilot, a group of Japanese pearl divers with unbelievable lung capacities, and several criminals en route to jail. During a terrific storm, the criminals commandeer the ship. Their mutiny doesn't last long and the captain eventually regains control and sets the mutineers adrift. Despite the warnings come from the eminently erupting Krakatoa, the ship continues its journey to the sunken ship. Once there the divers quickly discover nothing in the underwater vessel's safe. Only the captain's log remains. The volcano rumbles on and so the ship races to the shore to pick up people staying at a Catholic mission on the island. Among them is the son of the late captain of the other ship and with him, he carries the pearls. Just after he shares them with everyone else, Krakatoa blows in a spectacular spectacle of noise, light and drama. Soon afterward the enormous tidal waves begin and to save themselves the terrified passengers attempt to save themselves from the volcano's ancient wrath.
