I have to say, I have loved everything I have seen from Makoto Shinkai. He has a way of capturing emotion that is unrivaled. The biggest problem I have with him is that every one of his movies have the same theme of love lost and of distance but in different settings. I wish he would broaden a bit and show me something new. The animation in this movie is fantastic and beautiful although the pacing seemed a bit off. I have my eyes on Shinkai and whatever he does from now on because with his skills, he might be the next Miyazaki.
Makoto Shinkai's sophomore effort avoids the few animation problems from Voices of a Distant Star, while losing none of the emotional pathos. The film is very similar to his other works, just extended to a full length film. Its a talky film, and would seem quite slowly paced for those seeking action. However, the emotional payoff is terrific. It is not excusable to miss this film if you are already of Shinkai's others.
My one complaint with this movie is that it was too short. I like how it brings the fact to light that if someone were light years away, a signal travelling at light speed would reach Earth years later, hence some of the dramatic tension of this movie.
At times very beautiful, and at other times very slow and almost boring. A melancholy drama that comes up a bit short, could've been stronger. The characters (as with Shinkai's 'Voices of a Distant Star') are separated by an obstacle that interferes with their love lives. I felt as though he took a similar theme (a life altering moment that is never forgotten) and for this film stretched it out to 90 minutes. Liked it, didn't love it.
Hmm...it was nice to look at, but the pacing was awfully slow. I guess the movie is supposed to be slow to symbolize the loneliness and sadness of the characters and their bonds of love and friendship. Still...I was not entertained.
Interesting idea, but it suffers from the same problems I've seen in another Makoto Shinkai film 'Voices of a Distant Star'. Meaning, pace is very slow and quality seems subpar when compared to other anime feature films (even though it is a full scale production this time). And just like in 'Voices of a Distant Star,' the characters seem to be trapped in a situation they cannot escape from, so they just go along. That's a little bit disturbing for me, but still pretty good.
Interesting but kinda confusing. I love the atmosphere and background here. Story is kinda silly though. A good mind trip anime if your in the mood for one.

Makoto Shinkai directed it very nicely, I love how he captured the scenery and characters in this movie, and love the scene involving Sayuri and Hiroki's first train ride together and the heartwarming ending... ^_^
A fine exampleof anime. Captivating story and characters, but like most, the story is a little deep and can take a while to get your head round. Definately worth the effort though
A disappointingly short movie, in a good way I suppose. A very distant relationship between a boy and girl as one is stationed out in outer space. The two struggle to keep in contact, and their love is tested. Tearjerker.
