  "The Things of Life" starts with a bang with a horrific car crash in the country, followed by the testimony of the bystanders. The movie then rewinds to show how Pierre(Michel Piccoli) got there, starting with him waking up next to his younger girlfriend Helene(Romy Schneider). They are talking about moving to Tunis for three years. In return, he knows he would be giving up his old life which includes Francois(Jean Bouise), his best friend, father(Henri Nassiet) and grown son(Gerard Lartigau), an inventor. Of course, the car crash takes any kind of decision out of his hands, an event that might not have happened if he had been more committed to a course of action. We all know that everybody loves a car wreck and Pierre's life is no exception as he is at a crossroads in his life. So, the actions of the first half of the movie take on new meaning and importance with not only Pierre's survival at stake due to a cruel twist of fate.

  The story itself is very simple, involving a man, his wife and his mistress. Whilst this story could come from any run of the mill drama of the time "La Choses de la Vie" manages to not only be emotional but also very effective. In fact there's alot to like here, we have some great acting from Piccoli and Schneider. Sautet is also inventive with flashbacks, dream scenes and slow motion which far from being gimmicky is extremely poetic and powerful. And to top it all of there is a beautiful soundtrack from Phillipe Sarde. A film which is bound to stay with you.
