The interesting thing with films like La moitié gauche du frigo (The lefthand side of the fridge) is that they are unconventional. We have the impression of seeing something new (and it is, actually). Directed by Philippe Falardeau, this film is the perfect example that it is possible to produce an excellent movie with a solid concept at a low price.
It is actually a kind of fictional documentary about Christopher, an unemployed engineer whose day to day life is filmed by his coloc Stéphane, a homemade filmmaker doing a documentary on unemployment. Then, we can?t expect to a full of action blockbuster or any other cinematographic work similar to this one because it is authentically unique. The movie gives the impression that it is a kind of homemade reality-show, in which we follow the interesting quest of a unemployed adult auditioning for jobs, knowing that the documentary goal of Stéphane is that his movie will end when his buddy Christophe will get a full-time job. La moitié gauche du frigo offers, with a subjective camera and also with frequent dialogues between Christophe and Stéphane at the camera, an intimate vision of the life of Christophe, which make the concept of the movie incredibly interesting.
Paul Ahmarani has always been, in my opinion, one of the finest Quebec actors. In every movies he appears in, he always delivers what we expected from him and even more. His performance overflows of humanity and naturalism, which is amplifying the intimacy of Falardeau?s film. Seriously, I wouldn?t want anyone else than him to play the unemployed Christophe in this movie. He?s perfect in that role.
Philippe Falardeau is one of the few young Quebec directors who profited of a rise of the popularity of the industry of Quebec cinema since 2000. In fact, I should say that he even contributed to this rise, because ? and it?s the same with Denis Villeneuve and other growing directors, they bring a refreshing wind on our cinematic industry. A movie like this one proves to me and the other seven million of people living here that it is possible to produce, and at a very low cost, a little indie gem. Obviously, La moitié gauche du frigo is certainly not one of the greatest film coming out from here (in about sixty years of fictions, we did so many so many great movies), but the simple fact of bringing some fresh air to our products automatically involve a immediate appreciation from the viewer. After all, is there anything more interesting than something unusual that we?ve never seen anywhere else before? I think not. I conceive that there is nothing better than a movie unique in its genre. It is, personally, what I felt while watching Falardeau?s first movie (and it was quite similar when I saw his second movie, Congorama in 2006) and I was actually pleased of feeling this way.

Ce qui est bien avec les films comme La moitié gauche du frigo est qu?ils dégagent quelque chose de non-conventionnel. On a l?impression de voir quelque chose nouveau (et ce l?est, vraiment). Le film réalisé par Philippe Falardeau est donc le parfait exemple d?un bon film avec un concept solide et qui n?a pratiquement pas coûté une cenne.
Il s?agit ici d?une sorte de faux documentaire, d?une semi-fiction à propos de Christophe, ingénieur chômeur qui se fait filmer dans sa vie de tous les jours par son coloc Stéphane, réalisateur d?un documentaire amateur sur le chômage. Il ne faut donc pas s?attendre à un film d?action, ou quoi que ce soit qui puisse se référer à une autre ?uvre cinématographique connue. Le film donne rapidement l?impression qu?il s?agit d?un sorte de reality-show amateur, dans lequel nous suivons les déboires d?un chômeur à la recherche d?emploi, sachant que le but du documentaire de Stéphane est que le film doit se terminer lorsque son colocataire déniche un emploi. La moitié gauche du frigo nous offre, par l?entremise de la caméra-épaule ainsi qu?à des dialogues fréquents entre Christophe et Stéphane à la caméra, une vision plutôt intimiste, ce qui rend le concept du film incroyablement intéressant.
Paul Ahmarani a toujours été à mon avis l?un des meilleurs acteurs québécois. À chacune de ses présences au grand écran, il livre la marchandise à sa manière. Ses prestations débordent d?humanité et de naturel, ce qui amplifie énormément l?aspect intime du film de Falardeau. Sérieusement, je ne voyais personne d?autre pour jouer le rôle du chômeur Christophe dans ce film.
Philippe Falardeau est l?un de ces très jeunes réalisateurs québécois qui ont profité de la hausse de la popularité du cinéma québécois depuis les années 2000. Je devrais peut-être même dire qu?il y a contribué, car, au même titre que les Denis Villeneuve et cie, les jeunes réalisateurs amènent un vent de renouveau au cinéma du Québec. Un film comme celui-là prouve, à moi et aux sept autres millions d?habitants du Québec, que notre province peut, et à de très faibles moyens, produire des petits chefs-d??uvre indépendants. Évidemment, La moitié gauche du frigo n?est certainement pas l?un des meilleurs films provenant du Québec (en soixante ans de fictions, y?en a eu d?autres excellents films), mais le simple fait d?amener de la fraîcheur aux produits du terroir entraîne une appréciation immédiate du spectateur. Car après tout, peut-on s?intéresser plus qu?à quelque chose dont on a jamais entendu parlé. Je le conçois, il n?y a rien de mieux que d?apprécier une ?uvre à laquelle on ne peut référer à, puisqu?elle est unique. C?est, personnellement, le sentiment que j?ai éprouvé lors de mon écoute du film de Falardeau et c?était franchement plaisant. -

Vraiment, mais vraiment franchement intéressant. Je ne m'attendais pas à ce que ce soit aussi constructif, aussi ''novatif'' comme style de réalisation. Sincèrement, tout au long du film, on reste rivé aux aventures de Christophe vues par les yeux mécaniques de Stéphane, et c'est franchement merveilleux. L'idée de la semi-fiction est aussi vraiment intéressante et rend le film réellement passionnant, et ce malgré un sujet assez banal qui se transforme assez vite en reality-show.
