Was it passion, vengeance, desperation, an accident? The acquaintances of Gilbert testify, as well as Dominique's former lovers, and her sister, Annie, the studious violin player engaged to Gilbert. A very interesting piece from Clouzot. Very good acting from everyone involved, excellent lighting, and although there's no suspense like in most of Clouzot's films, "La Verite" still includes his bitterness towards humans. "La Verite" is a court case drama that I thought was totally absorbing. For two hours you listen to a woman's trial and you also get to see the events that led towards her arresting in a sort of "Rashomon" style except that you dynamically sympathize with characters as time passes by. It all leads to a poignant finale.
