A sad story (which, as I understand it, is based rather loosely on a book, which is thought to be pretty inaccurate itself, so this is practically a work of fiction) of an intriguing character in a hard but enchanting time in history. Not feeling obligated to stick real close to the actual story gave them some leeway to make the story flow better, and it does tell an inspiring story of dedication in the face of adversity and weakness. I guess I'm just a little disappointed to find out that it's not really very accurate, when it's billed as a bio-pic.
Diana Ross should have won the Oscar for her brilliant portrayal of jazz legend Billie Holliday in a riveting performance produced by Motown legend Berry Gordy and directed by Sidney J. Furie.
The screen chemistry between Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams is a moment of cimematic bliss. Nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture.
Forever a Black classic...I actually have said that to women in my past..."You want my arm to fall off" Billy Dee Williams...The real life all-time Mack.
Again, I will say this. If your going to tell a story on a person's life, tell the darn truth. I saw this movie once, and I am sorry, I had no feelings or nothing for it. We know Billie had her troubles, but why add more to the misery pot? Sorry. though I have to say it's worth Billy Dee doing his thing and see Diana sing a few of Billie's hits, uhh uhh. I'm not feeling this.
Oh, the tortured soul of Billie Holliday. Diana Ross was amazing, she pulled off the best renditions of Lady Day's music...EVER! Great Cast. Billy Dee as Louis Mc Kay...OMG! that smile, that voice when he says "...do you want my arm to fall off" melts me every time! He is so beautiful and so sexy!
I love this movie! The music, the fashion and the passion displayed in this film. Diana Ross shines as Billie Holiday. Richard Pryor delivers a earthy performance while his humour shines. I always cry when beat up Richard.
Diana Ross surprised me with her interpretatino of the late, great Billie Holiday! Richard Pryor flexes his acting skills here, too. Serious, sad, but BEAUTIFUL. Loved it! You don't have to be a Jazz fan to enjoy it.
Outstanding acting and vocal performance by Diana Ross. Fabulous movie, with such a tragic ending, to such an AMAZING talent, as Billie Holiday. A must see for the music lover!
This movie I will never tire of watching. Diana Ross should have won the Oscar she was nominated for in this movie. The singing and acting is superb. This is a true story of the rise and fall of jazz legend, Billie Holiday. Superb!
I saw this movie for the 1st time 7yrs, after it was out, and still the beauty in Ross's performance leaped off the scene. Williams is such a gentleman. He set the tone for MAN, in all the films to follow.
I wanted to rate Mohagony because that is actually my favorite Diana Ross movie..but they don't have that choice. I like this movie also. She really brought the broken heart and spirit of Billie Holliday to life. I ached for her.
Billie Holiday is my ALL TIME FAVORITE vocalist. I think Ms. ROSS did a fabulous job. The whole cast was great and the movie ROCKZ no matter how many times I've seen it ...
