I really enjoyed this movie. Not only because it is very good early Hitchcock, but because Margaret Lockwood was so great and there was something about her on screen that really made me care about what happens to her. Hitchcock was Hitchcock here with his moving shots and his fantastic use of shadows. Great stuff.

Surprisingly fluffy; there are a few interesting ideas, at least as much in the screenplay as the direction, but just as many which are gratingly predictable, so I was surprised to find something that is more a nostalgic, good old fashioned diversion than some great and moving classic of cinematography. Worth catching if it shows near you and you're not too busy, simply for the experience of seeing something of this era in a cinema, but though it's a fine example of its time and genre it's no biggie if you miss it. Now I'm no expert on this and only theorising here, but perhaps the main problem in really appreciating the masters of early sound film is that the techniques they pioneered have been so influential that they're now taken for granted - it is only in comparison with the works of lesser filmmakers, still struggling to make even a coherent narrative in this new medium, that works such as this really shine.

Early Hitchcock that has some really cool moving shots that give you a little taste of what is to come later in his career. I like the way he used models in the opening. It's also surprising how funny this movie is, but at the same time I think the plot was a little much at the end. Redgrave is great.

Attractive and intruiging.Unfortunatley I kept felling asleep because I was simply tired and did not get to the deeper end of this movie, but what I saw was alright, aside from being somewhat repetative and tedious. Margaret Lockwood was beautiful and Michael Redgrave irritatingly attractive, i like the romance here. Unique and tense, but very sweet.

An amazing movie by Hitchcock, the newer version "flight plan" I heard was kinda crap but I love this one

Keyword: Patience. If the first 20 minutes or so don't make you want to change the channel or take out the garbage or go log on to Flixster and see what your friends are up to then you're just not paying attention. However, if the rest of the film doesn't glue you to your seat in uber-Hitchcock fashion then maybe you're better off at the computer blogging about your latest pair of shoes or why Ashton Kutcher is the best actor ever. Hitch's The Lady Vanishes is not only one of his earliest films, I think you'll find that it deserves recognition as one of his best.

Classic Hitchcock films one of his first films is very enjoyable mostly for its humor. It's suspense is not as great as his later work, but the great characters more than make up for this short coming.

A fun hitch film, and amongst his attempts at comedy in his pictures, this ones ranks as the most amusing.

I'm knocking it half a star though as during it approaches the end i'm totally confused about that Nun character switching sides. Is that for amusement? or confusion? Or how about that musician who gets strangled?

These things aside, this is one of the most enjoyable thriller flicks from the 30's. Reccomended!

The Lady Vanishes is Alfred Hitchcock's best British movie and his first masterpiece.

It is also an early example of his fascination with trains as tools for suspense and excitement.

All aboard for this espionage themed mystery thriller, starring the charming Margaret Lockwood as the heroine, returning to England to marry her fiancée.

Hitchcock lays the tracks for the journey ahead and sets the story into motion, as Lockwood befriends the genial lady of the title and, when she vanishes, is shocked to discover that her fellow passengers do not acknowledge her existence on the train. Her only ally is the charismatic Michael Redgrave in her search for the truth.

The movie then gains speed, as Hitchcock masterfully conducts us through a series of exciting twists and turns, occasionally slowing for light comedy from the amusing passengers, before going full steam ahead to an exhilarating conclusion to our journey.

Le film est très lent au début, la mise en place est plutôt ordinaire. Mais une fois dans le train ça se met en marche. C?est différent des classiques de Hitchcock, mais on sent la signature.

This film was really slow to begin, but once it had got started it was great. Was the lady ever on the train? If she was, why do they want to kidnap her?

    Lots of mystery and intrigue!

Very entertaining. It took a while to get going and looking back the first few scenes were fairly pointless. But once it went on the train, it was enjoyable.

LADY VANISHES is a different Hitchcock film because it does not involve any chases. Although the suspense is always there, as well the humor. And as always, this Hitchcock film is not a disappointment!

This is one of my favorite Hitchcock films, about a man and woman aboard a train who realize an old woman they have befriended has suddenly vanished. Top notch suspense!

This film is amazing. Why you ask is this film amazing besides the mere fact that it was created by Alfred Hitchcock? Well my friends this gem was way WAY ahead of its time. It has dry witty humor, delayed comedic reactions, a mystery that is actually mysterious and a really fun cast. If this movie lost its dated edge (the lack of computers and color for starters) it would fit right in with todays blockbusters. I suggest you watch it. Though I'm afraid you'll have to find it first...

This is easily one of the most suspenseful thrillers ever made, and is a great mystery. Why can't movies be made like this anymore? It's one of Hitchcock's best movies, and one of my absolute favorites.

I found this to be very quaint, extremely different from his other films but very well-handled, the transition and the paciong and the dialogue and how the characters bloomed and yet kept their strange qualities, a fun film, propagandic yes, but utterly delightful altogether to watch and Matgaret Lockwood is a stunner.

Will have to add this to my "favorite Hitchcock' list. Redgrave and Lockwood definitely click together. Too many other good things to mention. A must for any Hitchcock fan. Highly Recommended.

Redgrave & Lockwood were great together... Dame May Whitty was very engaging & funny... Favorite scenes are that of Redgrave & Lockwood in her bedroom & Wayne & Radford interactions in their bedroom & in the train's restaurant... Good suspense on solving the vanishing lady... Good Hitchcock movie...

Pretty good overall supsense by Hitchcock; but I have to admit I wouldn't have liked it as much without the comic relief from the cricket match guys.

I will admit that this movie does take a little while to get going but, when it does get going, it doesn't stop.
    Another great film by Hitchcock.

an excellent early Hitchcock film. light and humourous while at the same time edgy and suspenseful. can't say I'm much for the love story, but the rest of the plot is as golden as any Hitch classic thriller.

My favorite Hitchcock film of all time. It mixes comedy with suspense extremely well. Set in the Swiss Alps, a bunch of tourists meet at a village the night before boarding a train the next morning. A young girl named Iris (the excellent Margaret Lockwood) meets a young student named Gilbert (wonderful performance by Michael Redgrave). Of course they meet cute and can't stand each other. The next day on the train the lovable old Mrs. Froy (Dame May Whitty) vanishes and the chase is on to find her. You have to pay attention to the details in this one because things are not what they seem. An excellent film from Hollywood's golden past. One minute you're laughing, then you're on the edge of your seat. In my opinion, this is Hitch's best work. Just ahead of Psycho.

Gilbert: Come on, sit down, take it easy. What's the trouble?
Iris Henderson: If you must know, something fell on my head.
    Gilbert: When, infancy?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Gilbert: Can I help?
Iris Henderson: Only by going away.
Gilbert: No, no, no, no. My father always taught me, never desert a lady in trouble. He even carried that as far as marrying Mother.

Clever, a lot of fun, but a little thin. Still it stretches what it has well. Hitchcock's last film before going to Hollywood, the last time he'd work with such a limited budget.
