This is actually the first ever film I have seen where the audience clapped cheered and booed effectively as if they were a part of the actual proceedings in the film. amir was again at his best...

This is a heart warming true story about a village in India which had to fight for its freedom by playing a game of cricket....Excellent music.

Moulin Rouge ripped this movie off. Wasn't bad, I suppose, but I admit I wasn't paying much attention to it.

My first venture into Bollywood. It was a wonderful mix of art and political upheaval, that I feel only a Bollywood film could pull off.

I lurve this movie! It's soooo good. The only part I don't like is the annoying English lady, she reminds me of someone I know.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. This movie is epic in proportions (at 3h 40) but it is worth sitting through the long running time. The cricket match goes on a bit too long, but apart from that, this movie is such a pleasure to watch. I love the blend of Indian and English (cultures as well as languages). The musical numbers are particularly impressive.

Didn't dig all the singing (and it was a little long), but the story was really original and well told. I loved all the cricket-- now I know how to play!

I'm not usually a fan of sports films, but mixed with interesting period detail, beautifully shot locations and a political spin, this works really rather well. And it deserves applause for doing the impossible and making a game of cricket interesting.

The tax that Indians must pay to the British occupational government at the turn of the 19th century is "lagaan." This is the price that occupied peoples are always expected to fork over in some form or another whenever they have been "adopted" for their own good by "benevolent" foreign powers. This tax is always as unjust as is the tyrannical reign of outsiders over indigenous peoples. In Lagaan, a Bollywood spectacle complete with often unexpected but very much appreciated musical numbers, the tax has become unbearable in a time of drought and deprivation. How do the oppressed free themselves from this burden, albeit temporarily, and get back at the oppressors? Why of course, in fine political form, the Indians appropriate the British game of cricket from them and then beat them at it, thus winning a foolhardy and egotistical bet that means no payment of lagaan for three whole years. Beating the Brits at their own sport, a beautiful foreshadowing of the end of empire.

If Shakespeare were alive to see this film, I'm sure he would approve of its broad sweep. There really is something for everyone here. The groundlings as well, would surely approve : )

A favourite of mine, vibrant colours, melodrama, dancing, catchy tunes, all the trappings of a typical Bollywood movie. Except that the cast is actually talented. And somehow, the movie also transforms Cricket into an exciting sport to watch, something I never felt was possible. A must watch even for those who don't watch Bollywood.

Could have seen this in uni as part of my Asian cultures course. Chose not to as it is 8 hours long and I can't go for more than four hours of a film in one sitting.

I had to watch this movie for my poli sci class where we were talking about conflicts throughout history... this movie was coupled with the entire separation of India and Pakistan and all the violence that followed... as I enjoyed the second, which is called "Earth" if you're interested, though it was very disturbing... the reason we watched this film was to gain persective on the relationship between the British and the Indian people... yet, this movie was really boring... nothing about it was interesting and it just went on and on and on... there was one particular song about the drought that just wouldn't end... in fact, the movie was so long, we weren't able to even get to the half way mark after two hours! We had to fast froward to the end to see who won the damn competition, and of the course the outcome was predictable... Ugghh... this just sucked!
