Horrible sci-fi released in the wake of Star Wars is only for those who enjoy camp.

I've just watched the ten-part MST3K Version of this film on YouTube, and I can honestly say it truly deserves its 2.1/10 rating on IMDb and its position as the 95th worst film ever made. It made me realise I've been using the adjective "dismal" hyperbolically ever since I added ...( read more)it to my vocabulary and forces me to recalibrate every rating I've ever given.

And yet, I'm forced to say that this film had been holding a special place in my heart ever since I saw the movie poster when I was 12. Back then, "laser" was a magical word, suggestive of all the wonders of a sci-fi future (which would arrive in the year 2000.) Electronic music had to have pew-pew-pew sounds, because this was the sound laser made, and the concept of owning a laserblaster was terrific, as if it could magically make a galactic hero out of you (although it's nothing but another way of killing people.) I knew the gun in "Laserblast" turned you into Klaus Kinski (in fact I thought the guy on the poster was Klaus Kinski), but the poster showed a spaceship and aliens and people X-rayed into skeletons by the gun. That promised such adventure!

Well, despite the laugh-out-loud moments provided by the MST3K crew (loved the Vaal reference), this film was quite an ordeal to go through and gave me a headache. Its only redeeming feature is the stop-motion animation by Dave Allen (I love this guy.) Even Roddy McDowall is not worth it, as he gets just a few minutes of screen time, examining the protagonist's chest nubbin, and then getting blown up in his car (ooh, spoiler, as if anyone cared.)

One of my favorite lines from the MST3K commentary is: "Let's recap the movie so far: somebody just went to Acapulco, and somebody almost bought gas." After that, there's a lot of stuff blowing up (cars, people, a plane, a mailbox and even a "Star wars" road sign - now THAT was mean; the film probably imagined it was way cooler than "Star Wars" and could symbolically bury it.)

Bleh. (And I'm the kind of guy who just gave "Doctor Mordrid" a generous three stars.)

Full Moon Video brings us more camp which, you know, is barely watchable in this case. Full Moon's sci-fi stuff tends to be that way, doesn't it? Check out the MST3K version if you can.

Billy is our main character. He is kind of a dope who lays around all day and dates a woman who looks like Jack from "Nightmare Before Christmas". He finds a ray gun left by aliens who resemble turtles with out there shells. He soon becomes green and kills people with his new fou...( read more)nd gun. This movie Roddy McDowell as a fey doctor and Eddie Deezen as a nerd. So brilliant casting. Just once I would love to see Eddie cast as the tough guy. My favorite scene in the movie is when Billy blows up a billboard that says "Star Wars". That's it. No artwork or anything like that. Take that Star Wars-Laser blast can kick your ass!

    The MST3K version is funnier.
