Last Action Hero

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robert Prosky, Austin O'Brien, Charles Dance

Jack Slater is an action-film hero played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. An old projectionist (Robert Prosky) hands a magic movie ticket to Jack's biggest preteen fan (Austin O'Brien), and the kid steps ri...( read more  read more... )ght inside the latest Jack Slater film, becoming the actor star's sidekick in gunfights and car chases. But when Jack's nemesis (Charles Dance) gets his hands on the ticket, the fight busts out into the real world and Jack (à la Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear) refuses to believe he's a fictional character. Director John McTiernan churns some nifty scenes out of this setup, although the fiction-to-reality shuffle is not as deft as in, say, Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo, and the plot needs the kind of logic and discipline found in that classic when-worlds-collide film Back to the Future. Still, Schwarzenegger has moments of wit and smashing action, and we get a faux-movie trailer advertising an intriguing new shoot-'em-up: "Something's rotten in the State of Denmark--and Hamlet is taking out the trash!"

Upon a second review, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that I really liked it. Classic Cheesy Arnold, and every attempt is made to make fun of how awesome his movies are. Enough one-liners for everybody! "I am Arnold Brownschwigger!"

Another real person stepping into a movie screen, movie characters stepping out into the real world plot device. I don't think the main kid character hold the picture together very well. I don't care for the action. Schwarzenegger and the villain are sooo cartoonish. The conc...( read more)ept is not carried out very well from my adult perspective, but I know there is an audience for it.

One of the worst films ever made but you knew that already! (Charles Dance as the bad guy is always a bit of a giveaway!)

    REVIEW

This film has been described as a turkey by many a film critic, but then t...( read more)here aren't many Arnie films which aren't largely panned. However, if you watch the film with an open mind you may discover a hidden gem. The first time I saw this film I couldn't stop laughing. From the outset it was clear that this film was a parody of all those classic over-the-top Arnie movies rolled into one. One-liners, mad action, improbable stunts, a decent child actor, a good supporting cast (including a host of cameos), and plenty of humour. As Jack Slater (Arnie) walks into his apartment he immediately pulls out his gun and shoots his closet, opens the door and a man falls dead to the floor. Danny Madigan (Austin O'Brien) asks Jack how he knew there would be a man in there. Without thought Jack says "There's always a man in there". If this is to your taste, watch the film, if not, too bad.

I remember watching this for the first time when I was 10 or 11...and that was the last time, but, I remember being very entertained by it. I need to watch it again some time soon.

Wow. I am kind of amazed that I liked this movie as a kid. It's clever in parts but why the hell is it over 2 hours. I thought it was almost over and then there was an hour more.
