Better than what you might expect. It's a semi remake to Fistful of Dollars that takes place in 1930's rather than the old west. Bruce Willis does a good enough job as the main character.
I'm a big fan of Bruce Willis. I know, it's a fatal weakness of mine. I tend to like all of his movies, including the really, really, really bad ones. "Last Man Standing" might fit that description, but I still enjoyed this movie very much, and watch it often.
Based on the Story by Akira and Ryuzo Kurosawa and his samurai movie "Yojimbo", and later re-made with Clint Eastwood in "A Fistful of Dollars", which is set in the old West. "Last Man Standing" takes place during prohibition.
Bruce Willis is the nameless drifter/gunslinger-for-hire, John Smith from back East, who stops over in this West Texas town of Jerico on his way to Mexico. He finds that the town is run by two competing boot-leggers. Seeing an opportunity, he sets out to pit one against the other.
The movie's screenplay was written, as well as directed by Walter Hill, and I love the southern psychedelic slide-guitar work soundtrack of Ry Cooder. It has a great look about it too. It's well photographed.
The action sequences are fantastic. I love the John Woo style, of Smith's two-fisted 45's blazing in the many gun battles, and the endless supply of bullets. Christopher Walken is at his evil best as one of the big guns from one of the gangs. I also enjoyed the old-fashioned narration.
Decent western, kinda cheesy though..with some bad performances which take away from the seriousness of the plot. The writing could have been a lot better, Bruce Willlis makes the film though playing one tough bastard. Christopher Walken was good too.
Last Man Standing is an all out action western, the action is OTT the gunfights OTT but that is what is called for, it's got a story and its a good one which works well and gives you more than just the braindead action. Bruce Willis in a role made for him is backed up by a strong supporting cast who have to take a back seat to Willis, would have been nice to see more of Walken's character though.
Ok, it's not as good as Yojimbo. It might be as good as A Fistful of Dollars, but it's not as stylistically innovative. However, it's Walter Hill, and his work is always worth a look. I was reluctant to see this given the bad reviews, but I have to say it is a better film than most are giving it credit for.
Last Man Standing retells once more the original story from the novel "Red Harvest" of 1927, adapted into the Kurosawa masterpiece "Yojimbo", and adapted again into Sergio Leone's brilliant film "Per un Pugno di Dollari". Walter Hill makes a very testosterone-directed film with cool shootouts and a stylish direction. It isn't good, neither bad, but entertaining. Give this film a try and you wouldn't be dissapointed. Gotta love Cristopher Walken.
Not much to say about this film, as towards the end, I lost the plot a little through boredom. Had it not been for the stars in it, I don't think it would have any appeal at all.
A great movie that placed mobsters in a western setting. It was a great combination that let led to Bruce Willis slaughtering everyone. It was great!!!
this film was always good, but its better if you see yojimbo. that is the 1960 samurai flick that this story came from. this one follows that one well, and putting a mafia twist on it was a fun way to see the story.
Enjoyable, violent no-brainer. Set some years back in middle of nowhere america with an invincible Bruce Willis taking out two gangs of gansters who have taken over a town.
I love the look of this film and what it should have been.
The potential of mixing gangster characters, noir dialog and western action is unbelievable but Hill's somber tone removes all of the fun that balanced the brutality of it's predecessors.
The voice over in particular is painful. This story has been told 2 other times with out it and the story isn't that complicated...so basically its' there for stylish witty dialog which is not witty and barley stylish.
when you play grams with the wrog people it do feel good being the last man standing when the smoke is done.it's some way to live once life knowing and not knowing and taking it all
