An insular 12 year old boy who is being bullied at school finds companionship with a young girl who moves in next door, only to find that she is a vampire. Let The Right One In puts a new spin on vampire mythology which is intertwined with an innocent romance between two social o...( read more)utcasts. The approach is very low key, almost too much so. I found it rather sterile and lacking in drama and the moral ambiguity of the story didn't sit very well with me. At the end of the day the girl is going round murdering innocent people and the message the film seems to be conveying is that violence is the answer to your worries. I didn't feel any real attachment to the characters, and Lina Leandersson aside, I didn't think it was particularly well acted. I'd also have to say that the romance element is dispelled if you choose to draw the conclusion that her "father" who she treats like a virtual slave, was in fact the last 12 year old boy she had seduced. It's certainly an interesting and attractively shot film, but I wasn't as enamoured with it as everyone else seems to be.

Truely exceptional piece of film-making telling the tale of a relationship between a young boy and a girl named Eli. Some exceptional cinematography for the backdrop of a dark, bleark Swedish town-setting the tale of a misunderstoof boy and a misunderstood girl. A great horror drama about a girl vampire who befriends a bullied boy in Sweden, A great foreign film done on a small budget that has some great cinematography I have to add. It can be a bit slow, it's more drama than horror action, but this makes certain scenes have more of an i...( read more)mpact. One of the better vampire films around but the emphasis is on the relationship between the two children. Check it out!

Too subtle to be a horror and too honest to be a thriller, I guess you could call it a Giallo but there is a real innocence here that would make that unsuitable. I'm left with the conclusion that this is a truly original piece of cinema, beautifully filmed, brilliantly written an...( read more)d aptly paced. Probably the best alternative vampire film (Although Cronos is my favourite and Trouble every day got there first), this is a welcome relief to the typical goth fodder of recent years. Highly recommended!

Eli: [standing outside the door] You have to invite me in.
Oskar: What happens if I don't? What happens if you walk in anyway?

Is there something in the way?

A great story about a 12-year old boy, constantly bullied at school, only to b...( read more)ecome infatuated with a girl who moves in next door...Oh, and she's a vampire.

This is one of the best vampire movies I have ever seen. It's not necessarily a horror film, it just happens to have some bloody moments. The film is more of a character drama, dealing with two young characters, each with there share of problems.

The film is set in 1982 Sweden. Oskar is the young boy who is being bullied. He is smart, likes to read, and does well in school. At night he dreams of getting back at the bullies who pick on him.

One night, Oskar meets Eli, a girl who seems to get around in the snowy streets of Sweden without shoes or a jacket. She is interested in Oskar and Oskar becomes instantly smitten with her. He observes that Eli likes puzzles, prompting him to start communicating with her using Morse code through their walls.

    Oskar: How old are you?
    Eli: Twelve... more or less.
    Eli: What about you?
Oskar: Twelve years, eight months and nine days. What do you mean, "more or less"?
    Oskar: When's your birthday?
    Eli: I don't know.
Oskar: Don't you celebrate your birthday? Your parents... they've got to know.

So, the other thing, Eli being a vampire. She is 12 years old in body, but much older inside. She doesn't wish to kill and even has a helper early on work to get her the blood she craves. The story takes its form around the relationship between Eli and Oskar and what to do with their predicament.

The story is extremely well told, leisurely but appropriately paced. It has some subtle special effects to make the vampire angle work superbly, as well as some more obvious violent moments. Wonderful cinematography adds to this film as well.

As far as young actors go, the girl playing Eli is great at playing such a complicated character afflicted with a long and dark past. Another character who serves as Eli's helper is also very good in a small role.

This movie really does a great job at twisting around the vampire movie genre. It has a number of themes and motifs lurking in the subtext of this film as well, further adding to how effective it is.

The fucking awesome ending is certainly a great cap off to this very good film.

    Oskar: Who are you?
    Eli: I'm like you.
    Oskar: What do you mean?
Eli: [accusing tone] What are you staring at? Well?
Eli: Are you looking at me?
Eli: [points her finger at Oskar] So scream! Squeal!
Eli: Those were the first words I heard you say.
    Oskar: I don't kill people.
Eli: No, but you'd like to. If you could... To get revenge. Right?
    Oskar: Yes.
Eli: Oskar, I do it because I have to.
Eli: Be me, for a while.
    [pause]
Eli: Please Oskar... Be me, for a little while.

A dare any vampire film in the next 20 years to try and topple this astonishing work of art. Chances of that though, are slim to none.

Good vampire-drama. Not what I expected but it had some good performances, great performance by Lina Leandersson. The ending was poetic.
