Leatherheads Reviews and Ratings

Not bad as a comedy but fails to impress beyond dramatic superfluities.

Ever since O Brother Where Art Thou? George Clooney has been picking roles where he plays, really, a buffoon. A mildly entertaining movie in that it gives you an idea what the early days of football were like and that, in the beginning, football was meant to be a fun, non-violent...( read more) sport. Clooney and John Krasinski are good together.

A movie I found unromantic and not overly funny; it had a few giggles but nothing more. The first 45 minutes was actually quite entertaining and then it all just lost its way. The 3 leads are good in their roles though.

George Clooney did such a good job acting in this film and directing it as well! It really captured the feel of the roaring 20's and the early days of pro football in America. Well done!!

Aaaah George Clooney...what a great comedian! Another comedy which he did perfectly. Here he both acted AND directed.
Renée Zellweger, again in the role of the 1920s woman (as in Cinderella Man), proved again she can act a great deal, and so do Krasinski ...( read more)& Pryce.
Even the football scenes were watchable if you are as uninterested as myself.
Yeah I have to recommend this one to all of you!

I actually rather enjoyed this film. It?s been given really bad reviews, which I can't help but feel is a little unfair. The direction is great, the acting is spot on and the script is really, really good! C'mon people, it?s really not that bad!

I bet this is cute, even if football is in it.

Clooney, Krasinski and Zellweger are in good comic form and it's nice to finally get a film about the earlier football days. I also liked how the score and the performances are a lot like a film from the 1920's.

Other than that the script needed some work. Too much attentio...( read more)n is put on whether or not Krasinki's character was a war hero, when he already told the truth to someone earlier in the film. While the love triangle doesn't even work since it's clear that Zellweger only has eyes for Clooney. It's also not fresh at all that a bar fight is in the film. I can't count how many football movies have had bar fights. So there's nothing too special about the movie. It had a lot of energy in the beginning but it loses steam by the end.

George?!! You okay?! --------- I can not bear this Renee Zellweger!
  • August 23, 2009
Clooney pulls off a period film that feels like it was made in the 1930s. Comedic timing and style aren't for a modern audience, which is why it did terribly. This film deserves more attention.

A funny little movie...I caught myself giggling quite a bit. ;) Reminds me a lot of the humor in "O Brother, Where Art Thou."

    Better than expected.
  • August 7, 2009
best 2 combo; Goerge Clooney and football!!! yea!!
  • August 5, 2009
The film plays like an old slapstick comedy with very little wit. It's too boring and not very entertaining. A disappointment.

Worst film ever. Some films you can laugh at how bad they are but i was so bored i couldnt laugh.

Overall, I thought the film was ok and entertaining, however, it could have been much better. The film had a feel of a 1930's film, kind of like a combo of films such as Harold Lyyod's College and His Girl Friday. Clooney proves directingwise that he can direct a comedy. Actingwi...( read more)se, Clonney and Zellweger shine and have great on screen chemistry. On a negative, John Krasinski was ok in his role, but I believe another actor in that role would have brought more out of the character than he did. I didn't think that he had any chemistry with Zellweger. Also the tone of the film is off. It feels like the film is uneven. The film has 3 parts to it: 1) romantic comedy 2)football 3) Is Krasinski's character a War Hero? The romantic comedy part, I thought was the strongest part of the film. If they would have balanced everything out, then I believe that the film would have been great.

Cleverly written and likeable tribute to early cinema as well as the start of professional football.

OK film by Clooney. In the end it just doesn't come together. The evolution of Pro Football from novelty to a hugely popular sport could be an interesting story, but the film focuses too much on the love triangle and revelation of Krasinki's past. Also, it ends with a climact...( read more)ic football game, despite the fact that the actual game play doesn't play a big role in the film up til then. Clooney's great in screwball comedy though, and surprisingly, Zellweger wasn't as bad as I thought she would be, although still not great.
  • June 8, 2009
It's really too bad that this film falls on it's face as hard as it does. Clooney and, yes, even Krasinski are charming as shit and do what they can with the little material they are given. There is an underlying current in this film that I wish they would have focused more on (t...( read more)he changing of sports when the "rules" got involved) and instead tried to go with a tired love story which allows Zellweger to waste my time yet again playing that way ahead of her time woman role. Either way, Clooney does know how to frame a shot and make it look pretty, with nice cinematography by Thomas Newton Sigel. It's like watching Ladykillers by the Coen Bros., you keep wanting to like it, but then just find yourself scratching your head.

Clooney's first stumble as a director. It's not horrible, but it's also not interesting. It looks great and Clooney proves again that he could hang with actors during the Golden Age of cinema. Well, I must admit that George Clooney make a weird movie to me... It can't be called as a drama movie because this movie was very light, but full of long conversation with pretty much difficult words used... While if it's classified as a comedy, it didn't make me laugh at all!! ...( read more)How ridiculous... George Clooney himself just looks very old in this old fashioned movie, while Renee Zellweger gave a performance I've been waiting for since last I saw her in her Oscar winning performance in Cold Mountain... And John Krasinski really shows some potential as a young comedy actor... Overall, the story about football really didn't interest me best because the fact that I watched this movie just not to miss Renee's performance in her every single movie...

You see I like George Clooney, but damn what a waste of time and money. This movie was a disgrace to the NFL to what it is these days. I felt like I was watching a modern documentary.

"George Clooney like what he did for Burn After Reading, he does for Leatherheads but does it better and way funnier. Those last 20 minutes are funny and the highlights of the film. Renee Zellweger was funny as usual."

With the style we now know he could offer, Clooney delivers a mixgenre movie that combines historic facts, sports, romance and comedy that flirts with slapstick jokes. I'm a big fan of George Clooney's other directorial outings but Leatherheads just didn't cut it. I applaud him for trying to make not only another period piece but a movie that echoed the classic screwball comedies of the 30s and 40s. Leatherheads has its amusing moments (the spe...( read more)akeasy fight is the only one that sticks out right now) and I didn't hate Renee Zellweger as much as I thought I would or normally do. Clooney's Clooney but John Krasinski was pretty dull. I'm not a fan of sports or sports movies but I don't think my lack of enthusiasm for this movie had anything to do with that.

Took me a really long time to actually getting around to watching this movie, but it was worth the wait. Not a heavy story, just an enjoyable time. This movie is part romantic comedy, part sports movie part screwball comedy. Unfortunately none of these three parts are executed well. The majority of the cast has been better before.

A lovely and amusing film which really looks the buisness but is unfortunatley rather dull haha. As said the look of the film is truely brilliant, the costumes and sets all look great and really stand out.
The casting was very good, Clooney shows his quite surprisingly good prat ...( read more)falls and facial humour, his acting isnt tops but for this its sufficent. Both Krasinski and Zellweger are also good choices for the era, Zellweger has always looked as if shes been kidnapped from the era, anyway her acting is pretty dire. Krasinski is fine but nothing special, alittle too wet really. To look at they fit perfectly yet the acting isnt too good.
One scene where Clooney and Zellweger are escaping from a speakeasy raid by the police is pretty embarrasing really, corny, cheesey and terrible acting. It isnt much better throughout to be honest.
The whole thing is sweet and charming but its just dull and not very entertaining with dodgy acting, the great looks save it.
