A fantastic Canadian film, in both quality and content. Strange though, but in that lovely sort of way that draws you in. Basically it's the story of a highly intelligent boy growing up in a tenement in Montreal with his oddball, mostly insane, family, and the imaginary living dr...( read more)eam world he creates for himself which is often hard to distinguish from reality. This is one of those poetic sort of films that are magical in a way, and hard to define, breathtaking at times, confusing at times, also - but ultimately rewarding. In any case, it`s a truly unique film that should be seen by an anyone with an appreciation for "off the beaten path" type films.

Because I dream, I am not.

Leolo was the second and final film from the French Canadian Jean-Claude Lauzon, who tragically died in a plane crash before making another film. This is a very hard film to describe, it?s sort of an absurdist journey through the mind of a mischievous youth. This kid, the title...( read more) character is not a reliable narrator; in fact he makes up all kinds of crazy stuff. It?s apparently a fairly autobiographical film, except it?s told expressionistically rather than literally. The film is fairly episodic, it just goes through a number of the strangely perceived events in the kid?s life. It?s a hard movie to wrap your head around and a hard film to comment on without further study. It didn?t blow me away, but I definitely dug it.

    LÉOLO (1993)
    dir. Jean-Claude Lauzon
cast. Maxime Collin, Ginette Reno, Pierre Bourgault

I am not sure if I liked this film. But I know its a good movie. Its about escapism. A kid alters the world around him with his imagination not to go mad like half of his family.

...( read more)ean-Claude Lauzon has an interesting vision of his main character but I have to say I am not sure his trashy poetry can be sold as something a kid would imagine. There are some great moments though, filled with such imagination you cannot not enjoy the thought.

Maxime Collin as the little Léolo is quite convincing even in the most awkward moments he doesnt back down. Ginette Reno as his mom is very good even if she has very little screen time.

At one point in the film Léolo walks in the street with his body-builder brother. They meet up with some dude who used to bully them, Léolo thinks his brotehr will kick the bully's ass but memories of childhood freeze him and he gets beaten up, crying like a big fat baby on the ground. There is something very touching about that moment, very primal, it kind of made the film way better for me.

Léolo doesnt really have a plot, its simply about the character's imagination. Many good stuff, and lots of naughty stuff as well that we could have gone without but its definitely a good film.

One of the craziest and the greatest Canadian films ever made. Despite the dysfunctional nature of pretty much everyone, I loved all the characters in this film!

What you get is a very symbolic and poetic film, thought-provoking by moments, grotesque by others. It reminds of Michel Tremblay's Chroniques du Plateau Mont-Royal and of L'Avalée des Avalés, a brilliant novel from Rejean Ducharme which is directly quoted in the film. It was wri...( read more)tten and directed by Québécois filmmaker Jean-Claude Lauzon, who died in a plane crash in the summer of 1997. "Leolo" is obviously a very personal film, and an fantastic one, too. It is packed with bizarre (and unforgettable) imagery: Leolo pleasuring himself with pork liver; a young girl chewing on an old man's toenails; Leolo trying to kill his grampa with a hangman's rope; a kid screwing a cat... It's hard to describe a film life this. It's undeniably very original, inventive and well crafted, and I like how Lauzon takes his time to get to his point.

this is very charming, quirky, beautiful, and original movie., it reminds me a lot of 'amelie'.,
i dont know what else i should say about this movie, i mean this is a complete and accomplished movie.,
does it has a good plot? yes
    how about the story? superb
the directing? very go...( read more)od
    originality? you bet
    performances? great
soundtrack? nicely chosen ( especially 'you cant always get what you want' by rollingstone)
but one thing for sure, If you are one of those movie lovers who used to seek out the offbeat and the challenging, and who feel sick of most movies because they all seem the same, you have to give this one a shot.,
it's a shame that the film this great doesn't have much recognition as it deserved..

A wonderful movie rich in fantasy and cynicism of a young boy who retreats in his dreams to escape his dysfunctional life.
