Wonderful French war movie. One of the greatest. Tough, stripped of that humane touch that modern war movie try to develop. Yet, you'll never be quite as disgusted by war as during the mine episode when a platoon has to hold a position for hours knowing full-well that the enemy h...( read more)as put tons of explosives underneath and is about to blow it up. Brilliant, just hope we'd be able to make such wonderful movies nowadays.

I must say one thing first. The effects in this film was splendid. I mean, it was fantastic for its time and though it might be more theatrical or cinematic in its capture of trench warfare than being real, it still brings out the pathetic and plain waste of humanity and yet neve...( read more)r preaches for one side or the other. It really depicts the immorality and irrational attitudes of the people in power and still doesn't meander into pointless cliches. A wonderful film and one that captured some thoughts in me and me learning something too.

"Wooden Crosses" has left me stunned and devastated. It's one of the most powerful war movies I've ever seen (and I generally don't like them much), and moved me to tears from the first hour on, until the chilling finale. Calling it hopeless is being kind: it's gruesome, bleak, n...( read more)early oppresive with its realistic violence. It does suffer a bit from its slow first half (which still includes some unforgettable scenes) and some acting flaws, but later it grows in pain and excellence. The cinematography is more than impressive in the battle scenes, which are an incredible depiction of the horrors of war. I doubt there are many anti-war films as direct, elegant and moving as this one. A real lost masterpiece.

Some unforgettable moments and imagery. A massive achievement for 1931.

Here's my deal. World War I was a dumb war. Years of history classes and it keeps coming back. There should have been some better planning.

This is an extremely gorgeous movie that kinda suffers only from the fact that it is more of a chronicle of the harshness of war rathe...( read more)r than focusing on a single character. But the overlays and the memory sequences make this movie worth watching if nothing else.
