In this film, Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) is only eight days away from retirement and his partner, Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson), once again manages to get them both into hot water with both the LAPD and the bad guys, who this time are Jack Travis (Stuart Wilson) and a gang of hoodlums selling armor-piercing bullets. Joe Pesci returns as the fast-talking schmuck Leo Getz. A new addition to the cast is Rene Russo as Lorna Cole, a sergeant from internal affairs sent to investigate Riggs and Murtaugh, but who ultimately ends up falling in love with the caffeinated Riggs. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Critic Reviews
-
, TIME Magazine
A cheerfully amoral movie that cannily caters to and satirizes our passion for cinematic violence.
-
Variety Staff, Variety
Manages to be highly entertaining and sanctions all its violence by making the bad guys so despicable that death seems to be the only solution.
-
Geoff Andrew, Time Out
What this sequel delivers is still the kind of high-speed roller-coaster action that producer Joel Silver's films often do so well.
-
Vincent Canby, New York Times
The movie isn't going anywhere, but it goes in circles at top speed.
-
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
Mediocrity wielded by experts.
