I really wanted to like this movie. The characters were too wooden to construct a proper, emotional drama.

Christensen and Kline have a wonderful chemistry. And although it lacked originality, it's a fine film.

During this experience, George reconnects with his son and his divorced wife Robin, played by Kristin Scott Thomas. The process of building the house is eye opening for both George and Sam. Sam in particular changes from a rebellious drug abusing teen into something more closely resembling his father. This is evident in the final sequence, in which Sam gives the house to a woman disabled by a car accident caused by George's father while driving under the influence...very touching...

I am truly surprised this has rated as well as it has. I really found this quite second rate. Hayden Christensen in particular is truly awful. His bratty teen is outstandingly unconvincing. By the 60 minute mark I was watching it on fast forward, I so wanted it to be over and watch something meaningful (or at least not pretending to be).

This is a solid drama starring Kevin Kline as a man who has terminal cancer. Realizing life is to short he takes his troubled teenage son with him to build a home and to get closer as a family. This role most likely helped him get his Anakin Skywalker role. The ending is predictable but is still worthy of a watch.
