Critic Reviews
-
Ted Shen, Chicago Reader
Smart, poignant, and utterly beguiling.
-
Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine
It's a bright, engaging bauble with half a dozen Elvis Presley songs for Mom and Dad, and just enough sass -- Stitch sticks his tongue into his nose and eats his snot -- to keep the tweeners giggling.
-
Geoff Andrew, Time Out
Regrettably, towards the end the film veers off into a mess of weird aliens and Cartoon Network silliness.
-
Robert Denerstein, Denver Rocky Mountain News
An entertaining and (three cheers) modest bauble that eschews most of the blockbuster trappings that have been strangling animated features in the past few years.
-
Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper
[A] crushing disappointment.
-
Ed Park, Village Voice
Mostly the film is just hectic and homiletic: two parts exhausting Men in Black mayhem to one part family values.
-
Nell Minow, Common Sense Media
Cute story, great characters, fabulous soundtrack.
-
Tim Brayton, Antagony & Ecstasy
It is the sweetest Disney movie of its generation; but the lengthy beginning and somewhat shorter climax drag it down at the worst possible points.
-
Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed
This is a very disappointing effort from Disney.
-
David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews
...an affable but hopelessly uneven fantasy...
-
James Plath, Movie Metropolis
It's offbeat, action-packed, and it has a heart as big as a Hawaiian welcome. And in keeping with the Disney philosophy, the style of drawing has its own distinctive look.
-
, Film4
It's funny, it's sad and, frankly, it's a bit weird.
-
Michael Dequina, Film Threat
Easily one of the strangest products to ever emerge from the Disney animation pipeline.
-
Scott Nash, Three Movie Buffs
The movie does manage to tug at your heartstrings with its themes of loneliness and finding a place to fit in, but it does it without ever rising too high on the sap-o-meter.
-
Jon Lap, Apollo Guide
Similar to most contemporary American feature-length animation, the film's overall structure is frayed.
-
Jeffrey Overstreet, Looking Closer
... it unapologetically affirms that love can make good things happen in a broken family.
-
Michael Dequina, TheMovieReport.com
A raucous comedy/adventure [and] easily one of the strangest products to ever emerge from the Disney animation pipeline.
-
Daniel M. Kimmel, Worcester Telegram & Gazette
Putting aside the Pixar computer animated offerings, this is the best Disney animation in nearly a decade.
-
Harry Guerin, RTE Interactive (Dublin, Ireland)
Make sure your kids don't get too much sugar in the cinema - the house mightn't be up to the mayhem when they get out.
-
, Empire Magazine
All the sentiment and charm you'd expect from a Disney movie, but easier to swallow thanks to mature themes and realistic characters.

Gave my nephews the choice of a 5 Disney cartoons they hadn't seen and they choice this, which worked out great for me. I love "Lilo and Stitch". Stitch is the funniest and more refreshing Disney character in years(well outside of the Pixar movies). The movie follows Stitch who is an alien who was created for the simple reason to destroy and kill everything. He lands on Earth and is mistaken to be a dog, and adopted by two sisters. Aliens then begin to hunt Stitch, while he forms a bond with his new family. Stitch is hilarious and has some great little one lines("cute and cuddly!" When the movie focuses on the sisters, it's very heartwarming, but you miss Stitch. The action is great, and the music is perfect! Elvis songs still kick butt. I remember seeing this at the Paris theater when it came out and I just laughed and laughed. Still laughing, and it's great seeing my nephews getting as much joy out of it as I did. If you or your kid haven't seen this, then you need to go get a copy, because ya'll are missing out!

Another wonderful and hilarious movie from Disney. This film started out great, and the middle was really good, but the third act seemed a little uneven, and I found it hard to get into it and stay with it. Honestly, this film is quite good, and don't let my words and grade make you think otherwise. It gets the grade it does because ofthe aformentioned reason, and because the animation could have been a bit better. Some scenes looked great, while others, not so much.
Stitch is an awesome character, and the source of a majority of the humor. I can really identify with him, especially his manic craziness. Bonus points to this movie for the Godzilla parody and the Elvis stuff. Overall, this is an entertaining and mostly satisfying film. B-.

You know you?re in for a different take when the film?s heroine, Lilo, in her opening scene punches another little girl and tries to beat her to the ground. Lilo is a troubled child living with her older twenty-something sis, Nani, in Hawaii after a car accident claimed their parents? lives. Nani is stretched thin trying to find a job, look after her troublesome little sister, and also stay a step ahead of the social services representative. Lilo is saddened at her situation and deeply longs for a friend.
In a galaxy far far away, a mad alien scientist is on trial for creating the ultimate in destructive evil-ness ? a manic six armed blue dog lookin? thing named Stitch. Through a series of circumstances Stitch manages to daringly escape and runs off to Earth, a protected planet because of a rare endangered species I won?t spoil. Stitch meets up with Lilo at an animal shelter and she immediately takes a liking to this offbeat pet. Stitch isn?t the friendliest or most well-behaved creature but he eventually warms up to his new family. You can pretty much take it from there.
What makes ?Lilo and Stitch? so much better than the last few Diz offerings, besides a total lack of songs, is it?s a fresh and daring Disney animated film. The focus is on an unconventional family with no pristine smooth edges around them (hello opening Lilo hitting other girl sequence) and the material is shown a remarkable level of maturity. That isn?t to say that ?Lilo and Stitch? isn?t funny, because it has many charming and hilarious moments, many due to the sputtering and wild Stitch.
Not all the elements entirely gel well, especially the sci-fi with the family struggle. The animation has an old-fashioned look to it complete with backgrounds that look dusty, like the ones that were used in the 1970s. The characters have an anime tinge to them, like half moon mouths and noses like dinner rolls. ?Lilo and Stitch? is the hippest Disney outing in a long while and the best non-Pixar animated film since the underrated ?Hercules?.
Nate's Grade: B
