Live Free or Die Hard (2007)

This was a happy surprise of a Summer action movie. Where Die Hard was crooks taking over a whole building, and Die Hard 2, crooks terrorizing an airport, and Die Hard 3 where crooks were terrorizing a whole city, Die Hard 4 was crooks terrorizing t...( read more)he whole Eastern seaboard.

New York cop, John McClane (Bruce Willis) who has been stalking his daughter, Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is called in to pick up a nearby hacker Matt Farrell (Justin Long, aka the Mac) and take him to Washington D.C. for questioning.

John is surprised to be in the middle of an assassination attempt by a large group of paramilitary types killing off all the 3rd-party hackers who have been unknowingly assisting their efforts. This group, led by X-security expert, Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant) is bent on creating a fire-sale (hacking all computers, phone lines, and utilities) where everything must go.

As usual John is hampered with the bureaucratic BS and a bunch of serious criminals bent on killing him and stealing billions. Matt follows along, helps where ever he can, and is able to offer comic relief to John's unorthodox methods of kicking the bad guy's butts.

This movie has lots of action and stunts. I could have done without the flying cars in the tunnel scene, but that helped with the fun, I guess. Also the theatrical version was PG-13. Get the unrated version DVD to hear the Yippee Ki Ya, MF.

The fourth installment into the die hard series tries to hard and in affect dies hard (if you will pardon the pun). They try to add in more spectacular stunts and explosions and mostly it works because the action is directed very well but some scenes are just stupid and if you ar...( read more)e going to take a realistic angle dont make the main character indestructible. Despite all these flaws the action works.

A good film, but no where near as good as the first three films. If this film didn't have Bruce WIllis and 'Die Hard' in the title, it maybe wouldn't be worth watching again.

Bruce doesn't miss the mark, somehow coming back into this he's just seeming to get better at it. i mean, there's less to believe as far as the high tech heisting goes in this film, but hey, it's a good 'die hard' movie.

Bruce Willis is the ultimate American action hero these days. This movie is worthy of being in some sort of box set with the others so that I can buy them all.
  • October 6, 2009
Good thriller although not as good as the first two. Olyphant makes a great villan and Willis is always fun to watch.
  • October 5, 2009
ma number 1 movie. justin long is so kwl
  • October 3, 2009
remember choosing this one over Transformers because the daughter is pretty... :D... I think Bruce Willis can still save the city and even the world and die hard... although the aircraft scene is cartoonish for me... but still a good job from everyone....

It was with a sort of fondness for the eighties and my teens that a trudged my way into the cinema to catch this 4th long-talked-about installment of McClaine and his sardonic wit-in-the-face-of-terrorists DH adventure. That was it. I walked out still missing the crispness and c...( read more)haracters of the original. The ending by the way, had one of the most unforgivably uninventive endings I have ever seen. Only reason for giving it an extra "half`' is for the action sequences particularly the tunnel scene

too much action...too many close to death scenes of this film, not realistic enough
  • September 29, 2009
For the fourth installment of the Die Hard series this one did very well in my opinion. After years of letting the series sit someone thought up a decent, relevant script and put it into action. A good blend of action, humor and inside jokes kept the movie flowing through its 2...( read more) hour length. Some bits were hard to swallow with their over-the-topness but then again it's Bruce Willis.

And I thought Die Hard 4.0 would be a mistake. It was not! I enjoyed it once again, just like I did enjoy the three previous movies. A lot of action in this one but a bit on the edge. A 50-year-old cop can't survive some of those scenes, not even John McLane. But th...( read more)e humour was in the movie and the performances of Justin Long and of course the great Kevin Smith (not mute this time!) were very good. But what is a Die Hard movie without Rickman? Once again the bad guy wasn't good enough and didn't convince me.
I hope there won't be a fifth movie, this is just enough Bruce!

another great die hard film...bruce willis never fails to amuse and amaze me...the movie doesn't have one dull moment...exploding with action...a must-see
  • September 23, 2009
The fourth film in the popular and seemingly endless action franchise is the first since 1995's "Die Hard with a Vengeance" and I think it's safe to say that if he doesn't exactly pass on the torch, Bruce Willis may not be up to another go-around. Willis re-emerges here as old-sc...( read more)hool detective-cum-action star John McClane, a "Time-Ex watch in a digital age" as his nemesis refers to him. Time hasn't been kind to McClane - he's older, divorced and has a daughter, Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead of "Grindhouse"), who hates him so much (except when he's convenient, that is) that she goes by a different last name. Before long, McClane is unexpectedly asked to bring in a geeky and savvy young computer hacker named Matt Farrell (Justin Long). About two minutes after arriving at Farrell's cramped and packed little apartment, McClane is firing bullets down the hallway, ducking and covering, and trying to get Farrell the heck outta dodge. Turns out, Farrell is one of the loose strings being targeted by a cyber terrorist organization who hired him to help commit a "Firesale" on a national level - take out all of the computerized infrastructures of America and you set everyone back to absolute zero. This organization is led, more or less, by Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant, of TV's "Deadwood"), a disgruntled ex-government computer expert who is now trying to destroy the system he helped create, and his sexy and deadly Asian girlfriend Mai (Maggie Q). Meanwhile, Bowman (Cliff Curtis), the government agent who had McClane grab Farrell in the first place, tries to keep abreast of the deteriorating situation. Car chases, big explosions, endless gunfights, pursuits by airplane and helicopter, cyber cat and mouse games and an overweight geek who lives in his mother's basement but goes by the pseudonym "Warlock" (Kevin Smith) are just some of the pleasures of this surprisingly well-made and energetic action thriller, so well directed by Len Wiseman ("Underworld"). Willis is up to the task of being the hero, Long is a great sidekick for comedic relief, Olyphant is a terrific villain and the film's 130 minutes breeze by for the most part. What more do you want?

It's got this video game style that i didn't like and the plot was terrible. The acting and action was great though.
  • September 20, 2009
Worth the wait 100%. For a 50 year old Bruce Willis still has the ability to kick the crap out of any terrorist agency and he does amazingly well in this movie. The acting and updated action was really something I actually applauded considering the film is one of the many long aw...( read more)aited sequels that have re-energised the Die Hard movie series. Deffinitely better than Die Hard: With a Vengeance.
