Bernd Widmer (Ulrich Noethen) has just been released from prison after spending more than twenty years behind bars; Widmer was a member of a radical leftist group who unintentionally killed a man during a bombing, and after serving his time he walks out into a world where the cause he fought for is either forgotten or considered quaint. Widmer moves into an apartment where his next door neighbor is Valerie Matos (Franziska Petri), a single mother who has recently lost custody of her child after being accused of abuse. Widmer and Matos strike up a friendship over shared misfortune, but they soon discover they are linked by a strange coincidence -- Matos's father was the victim of Widmer's bomb.
