This might have been funnier had I smoked hashish like the Pakistani's did.

Albert Brooks is one of those actor-writer-directors who definitely hits and misses. Like Lost in America, this movie is mostly a hit. I laughed very hard for periods of time in this pseudo-documentary about Brooks' US government sponsored search to determine, in a 500-p...( read more)age report : ), what constitutes "funny" in India and Pakistan. I loved sequences like the job interview and, especially, Brooks' stand-up performance in India where he redefines impromptu comedy -- and revives one of his very early real-life ventriloquist routines.

More than anything in this, I was overjoyed to discover the acting and comedic talents of American-born Sheetal Sheth. She is definitely worth the watch, even if you've been disappointed by some of Brooks' work in years gone by.

Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World had a few laughable bits, but it probably could have been funnier. The concept sounds better than it actually is, but watch it if it just happens to be on; you might get a few kicks out of it.

Brooks fails to bridge that crucial sar-chasm that transcends any language barrier.

Albert does it again. A droll comedy and comedy of errors.

Just watched this again, and from most of what I read this a tragically misunderstood film. This is classic Albert Brooks humor. I almost get the impression that many viewers expected the film would actually explore the culture of "comedy in the Muslim world." That's not the p...( read more)oint here anymore than expecting Brooks' Real Life to provide fullfill the promise of the experiment with the Yeagers. Now, just as then, it's all about Brooks, at least the narcissistic performer version of himself that is self deprecated by the writer/director Brooks. This is the same guy who rode in to save the day in Real Life by donning a clown suit, and starting a fire to add drama. There is some political satire here, but not much. Albert Brooks has never made overtly political films, and while it might seem a missed opportunity, if you like what Brooks does in films like Real Life and Modern Romance, this is one of his best films since Defending Your Life, in my opinion.

Not one of Albert Brooks best movie but it still has enough good parts to at least check it out. Brooks plays himself as he is picked by the government to go to Pakistan & India to find out what makes the Muslims laugh and to write a 500 page report about what he finds. He is usu...( read more)ally more scared of writing the 500 pages than some of the situations he gets into. Worth a rental.

The idea wasn't necessarily bad, but the movie was.
