Lord of the Flies

David Brunjes, Hugh Edwards, James Aubrey, Kent Fletcher, Nicholas Hammond

In this classic 1963 adaptation of William Golding's novel, a planeload of schoolboys is stranded on a tropical island. They've got food and water; all that's left is to peacefully govern themselves u...( read more  read more... )ntil they're rescued. "After all," says choir leader Jack, "We're English. We're the best in the world at everything!" Unfortunately, living peacefully is not as easy as it seems. Though Ralph is named chief, Jack and the choristers quickly form a clique of their own, using the ever-effective political promise of fun rather than responsibility to draw converts. Director Peter Brook draws some excellent performances out of his young cast; the moment when Ralph realizes that even if he blows the conch for a meeting people might not come is an excruciating one. Well acted and faithfully executed, Lord of the Flies is as compelling today as when first released. --Ali Davis

a story about some little people on a little planet (not far from wherever you are now), and how they learned how to love one another by banding together and killing whomever was dumb enough to stand in their way...sound familiar?...no, it's not your grade school homeroom, it's s...( read more)ome brit kids on a island! chilling in the implications that we possibly aren't nice people.

I haven't read William Golding's novel since Miss Rayburn's senior english class but, with a few exceptions, this is the story pretty much as I remember. A dark allegory that remains faithful to the source material, sometimes at the expense of the film itself.

Amazing book, great movie. Delivered with unmatched accuracy, which might not actually work as a plus, since it feels like you're reading the book twice. But the performances are great, the direction splendid, and even though some themes of the book might get lost in translation,...( read more) the general point shines through in all its kingdom. A great movie-study of the depths of the human soul, of love, hatred, seclusion, loneliness and coming in terms with yourself.

The closest adaptation of William Golding's literary masterpiece.
Peter Brook was mainly a theater director, perhaps that is why his cinematic skills may appear flat, and his handle of kid actors is also average. Despite that, his naturalistic approach is a strength.

I enjoyed every minute of it because I felt I was there on the island with them. I did not know what would happen from one minute to the next because I had not read the novel. After seeing the movie, I bought the book and read it right through, hardly stopping.

Accurate, intense, and visually striking, this simple film still can't quite capture the horror of William Golding's classic novel.
