In late 1969, the Rolling Stones decided to end their American concert tour with a free concert in San Francisco, which after much legal wrangling ended up taking place at the Altamont Speedway. Rather than hire security guards, the Rolling Stones and their team persuaded members of the Hell's Angels motorcycle club to guard the stage in exchange for $500 worth of beer. The concert became a disaster, and a young man named Meredith Hunter was killed by Hell's Angels near the stage during the Stones' performance.
