  I liked this movie more than I ever would have expected, due in part because I really did not know what to expect. Essentially, it is a typical rom-com, but it tries so hard to be something more; and by-and-large it succeeds. I loved the echos of Breakfast and Tiffany's, and there were an awful lot of them. Jacks has more than a few things in common with Holly Golightly and "Tiffany's" is her favorite film to bout. There are a lot of people out there bashing Murphey's performance, and while she wasn't mindblowing, I was rather impressed. Besides, who really cares if she can walk in her stilettos? Plus, it seems a wee bit disrespectful to bash her now that she is dead. I liked Matthew Rhys in The Edge of Love, and he is even when actually playing a likable character. The dialog is snappy and clever, not really realistic, but damn funny! All around, Love and Other Disasters is lighthearted and fun, even the mandatory "serious" moments sparkle with levity. Is it shallow? Yes. It is obvious? Yes. Predictable? Yes. Is is enjoyable? Absolutely!

  think you've got to be in the right mindset for this one but if you're prepared to suspend your disbelief you can have a great time. If you like Ugly Betty then this is for you. But if you go in expecting War & Peace you're going to be disappointed. The clothes are great and there are some great performances from the likes of Dawn French and Catherine Tate. There are plenty of laughs and some brilliantly observed portraits of London types. Brittany Murphy is a luminous presence and although you get the message that she wants to channel Audrey Hepburn she sort of pulls it off. It's a step up from Love, Actually and Notting Hill and a lot more fun. Could the prominence of a gay story line be what seems to annoy some of the other reviewers here?

  Proving that America doesn't exactly have control over the formulaic rom-com game, we have this offering from the UK. And I think they should take it back. The film contains two big problems: the first is that it's utterly boring. I sat there hoping for something different to happen, different to films before it, and was treated to nothing spectacular. I wasn't riding on this to be the film that revolutionized the genre but I expected something to happen. But no, just lots of supporting characters musing on love, getting into stupid situations and then finding love (oh wow, big spoiler there. Please note sarcasm). The other comes from the lead character. Making her an American over in the U.K just doesn't make any sense to me and smells more like an attempt to get Americans to watch this. Apparently, it's up to the American girl to help her friends find love, as if to imply they run around like headless chickens because they're incapable of doing things for themselves. And let's not forget, she herself is without a boyfriend for most of the film. It's hard to find love for others if you don't have it yourself. I don't really want to attack Brittany Murphy for this choice in movie, as it's finally nice to see her do something different and light hearted (Spun, The Dead Girl, Riding With Boys In Cars, Sin City, all playing troubled characters to some degree.) Yet her attempts at an English accent are horrible and the fact that she swaps between English and American only drag the film down. I don't know, maybe after Four Weddings And A Funeral I was expecting potential from non-American filming. Would it have killed them to put a little more effort in?

  Just okay. It has a few cameo's in it from people such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Dawn French, plus Catherine Tate plays the very over the top friend, which may be of interest to some people. I just found it to be quite a typical not-very-good British romcom and the nauseating ending made me downgrade it from three stars to two.

  Brittany Murphy plays Emily 'Jacks' Jackson who's working in England as an assistant at Vogue and a wannabe matchmaker for her gay roommate and best friend Peter. Santiago Cabrera is Paolo Sarmiento, assistant to a famous gay photographer, and Jacks assumes Paolo is gay, and treats him like all the other gay guys she knows, running around in her underwear or inviting him into the bathroom to talk as she is taking a bath while attempting to fix him up with Peter. But we know right away that Paolo is not gay, and in fact is really interested in Jacks.

  An interesting movie. Good story plot. Alek Keshishian directs an intriguing and hilarious movie with Brittany Murphy starring. Here is a movie about a young woman trying to find the stability amongst the calamity of love. As she tries to sort out her own love life, she is also lending a shoulder for friends in need. Contains some hilarious scenes that hold muster, and Dawn French is absolutely amazing. Great laughter. Definitely worthy.
