One of our local movie. This movie is about sharing a huband's love with several women in one family. Defined from three different backgrounds. Allusive but amusing films. One of our finest :)

    Synopsis

Three women find themselves sharing their husbands with other women in this drama from Indonesia. A growing number of men use the faith as a justification to embrace polygamy, often over the objection of their initial wives. Salma (Jajang C. Noer) is a doctor whose husband announces he's going to bring another wife into the family. Despite Salma's anger, her husband marries a second and later a third woman, and she finds herself turning her back on her Western freedoms in favor of bringing greater peace to the household. However, when her husband becomes seriously ill, Salma is forced to come to terms with her unusual living arrangement.
Siti (Shanty) is a naïve girl whose uncle agrees to help her realize her dreams of attending beauty school. However, Siti doesn't realize until it's too late that her uncle expects something in exchange for his generosity -- for her to become the latest in his string of wives. Despite her disappointment, Siti finds strength and camaraderie with her fellow plural wives.
Ming (Dominique) is an attractive young woman who works as a waitress at a duck stall. Ming falls for the chef at the restaurant, and decides to accept his invitation to marry him. The chef already has a wife, but Ming also has her own reasons for agreeing to the match.

    My Review

Berbagi Suami (Love for Share) is an INDONESIAN movie which gives another thrill about 3 stories of women facing polygamy by their own perspectives. Strong performances by the all three leading actresses, and brilliant direction by Nia Dinata. She digs the POLYGAMY issue into its deepest depth, the most realistic way to represent it, with the greatness by the actors. Nia Dinata made the sensitive issue to be true in the screen, with all possibilities, without any fear to analyze the problem of its sensitivity.

Dan seperti kebiasaan Pak Haji yang selalu menghindari zinah, perempuan ini pasti sudah dinikahinya...
(And as it is Pak Haji's habit to avoid adultery, he definitely has married this woman...)

A dark half comedy movie made by Nia Dinata , one of the greatest Indonesian female director of all time .
Nia controlled her personal style beautifully and very "apik" , she kept her cinematography style and her way of directing in her way , a mixture of ironies and dark drama which rarely found in Indonesian movie . This movie packaged with great casts which fulfilled the character smoothly ,especially Dominique , the new actress .
The story itself is really 'Nia Dinata's style' , it's about polygamy which usually happens in downtown either in uptown .
[Fact : In some parts of Indonesia , they think that 'more wives means that he's rich' ]
In fact , this 'conservative' movie is very enjoyable because Nia packaged it in International way , the crews worked seriously in score , in cinematography ,in costume , in make up , they made the movie to be real and good-looking .
So , i can say that this movie is another 'Must watch Indonesian movie'

    In-One-Sentence : Provoking and surreal!

    Bigger Picture
Salma is,a gynecologist who had questioned the morality behind the practice of polygamy and had secretly wished it wouldn?t happen to her own marriage. But, her wish remains just a wish. As a faithful Moslem, Salma accepts her fate to have a polygamous husband.

Siti is a Javanese village girl who has high hopes for a better life in the metropolitan city of Jakarta . Her dreams are shattered once she realizes that living in the slum of the city in a polygamous household of her own uncle will not take her anywhere.

Ming is a waitress in a famous roast duck stall in downtown Jakarta . The cook becomes one of the men who date Ming regularly. But he cannot stand the fact that he does not win Ming?s exclusive attention.

    And The Review:
Berbagi Suami,or in English,"Sharing Husband",not "Love for Share" actually, is a heavy satire of the most disturbing phenomenon here, in Indonesia. In Indonesia, where Poligamy is everywhere,Nia Dinata bravely brought this heavily provocative story for the cinema consumption, intersecting 3 different stories in one big picture of love and pain, each from vastly different backgrounds and places.

The first story, set it's story in happy perfect family. In her middle age,Salma later found out that her husband had another mistress.Jajang.C.Noer,as Salma, beautifully acted this role, and standing strong as a woman who remains faithful in her difficult relationship,a exhilarating yet outstanding performance by Jajang.C.Noer.A heartbreaking story with depth and hard-hitting script, and a winning performances by the casts.

In the second set-up,singer Shanti, played Siti, perfectly! Her most grande and graceful performance in her entire career as an actress. The second story beautifully extracts how difficult the poligamy life is.Surreal, clever, and heartbreaking.

And in the final set-up,Dominique,a Indonesian model, played the role of Ming,a waitress who desperate of attention and had an affair with her boss,a chef. The third intersection of the movie grandly displayed Ming's love affair in Ming's point of view,as a struggling actress, and a waitress,in the metropolitan town. The story displayed a strong contrast of a secret affair in the metropolitan backdrop.

All three stories, packed in one-big-frame,with irressistible score, great depth in each story, and different style for each line-ups.Berbagi Suami is a cutting-edge and provoking movie about relationship, and successfully brought the message of woman empowerment and anti-sexist.

The 360 Spin : Salute to Nia Dinata, for bringing such a powerful story to the surface. One of the best Indonesian movie powerhouse.

This Indonesian reflects its country polygamy spciety very well through 3 women who has to 'share' her husband with another woman(or women).

This is not a heavy melo-drama or extreme-feminist one, but it comes out as optimistic comedy, that's why I like this film which is my first Indonesian film I've seen in my life.

Successfully capture local phenomena with Wong Kar Wai's style of filmmaking. Highlights for the scoring and screenplay.
