Elvis' first movie isn't a bad one. He performs a handful of songs. The story opens in April of 1865 and his older brothers, the Renos, are part of a Confederate unit that raids a Northern payroll train and takes the money. The irony is that the war is over but the guys do not ...( read more)know about the surrender of Robert E. Lee until they run into their own troops. Vance (Richard Egan) and his brothers decide to divide the loot, about $12-thousand between themselves and his men. Vance and his two brothers (William Campbell and James Drury of THE VIRGINIAN ride home to their ranch. Vance plans to marry Cathy (Debra Paget) but everything thinks that Vance died in the war. When he shows up, Vance discovers that Cathy has married his younger brother Clint (Elvis Presley) because she thought him dead. Eventually, the Federals come searching for the money and Vance is prepared to turn it over, but one of his old raider buddies (Neville Brand) won't let him. He foments discord between Vance and Clint by suggesting to Clint that his wife Cathy is running off with Vance. Robert D. Webb keeps the action moving at a fast clip in this 89-minute epic. Good performances by a solid cast. Elvis dies in the end, the only time that he ever died in a movie. Richard Egan is superb as the older brother. Even if Elvis movies are not for you, you'd like this black & white widescreen oater.
