After the dissapointing Duelist, where Lee's visuals outweighed the story was happy to see M is his most fantastic film yet. M is a mystery, but no murder mystery, it's a love mystery in a dreamlike world. Lee uses his artistic style perfectly, capturing those bizarre, surreal m...( read more)oments of the mind. There still isn't much of a story, the intrigue relies a lot on confusion, but M is very much an accessible art house film. If you are looking for the true beauty of cinematic expression, then this is the film for you. I'm currently listening to the soundtrack, which is an incredible piece of work on it's own terms.

Absolutely beautiful! Brilliantly assembled simple story of a writer in search of his muse, told with rich colors and lots of black, dream logic, humor, inspired editing, and a soundtrack that matches it beat for beat. I wanted to applaud almost every scene. Arty without pretensi...( read more)on and a poet's attention to detail.

It felt like a two-hour music video in terms of the sophistication of its themes, the coherence of the narrative and the lushness of the visuals. The director clearly has a good eye for colour and light, and draws a lot of inspiration from manga. And it really, really didn't need to be this long.

I expected something completely different going in and it was a little tough to follow in the beginning. Once it kicked in tho, it was an enjoyable story. Not too sure the highly stylized look was necessary, but I guess it worked out okay.

I think the cinematography was pretty cool, but the story was pretty bland. At a Q & A after a screening of this movie the only question the director really answered for me was that he was making a movie completely opened to the viewer's interpretation. Which would be fine except...( read more) that it was an overly confused movie and had no objective foundation. It may as well have been a blank screen for 2 hours, and then they ask you to imagine a movie, and take credit for it. I think he just had a few ideas for what might look cool on a big screen, didn't bother to write a plot, and tried saving his own ass by saying "it's opened to interpretation." ...artists...
