I seem to recall something of a critical fuss when this film was released in 1971, but it's now hard to see why. It's quite good.
The only film adaptation to depict a Shakespeare tragedy as I see it in my head: dark, bleak, and brutal. No squeaky-clean castles or eye-twinkling monologues here. A dark and ugly portrait of human nature. As it should be.
I have to say it was a little graphic, but much less than most of the horror movies that are so popular today. Macbeth is my favorite Shakespeare play, that I have read, and I think this movie did it justice.
The very real murder of Polanski's wife was the genesis of this ultra violent take on Shakespeare's finest play. A riveting spiral of hate, ambition and betrayal. great performance by Jon Finch.
This is one creepy look at Macbeth. It was slightly terrifying, but marvelously filmed and brilliantly acted.
Roman Polanski is a bit hit and miss in my opinion, but I heard his ultraviolent MacBeth was very good.
Polanski loved putting the naked in this movie. There was no need for the naked old witches or the naked boy, nor did I want to see the junk on that blond witch in the beginning. I had a hard time following this movie in that most of the people looked alike, and also, due to the fact that it was so long and boring.
F/X Supervisor: Do you think we need all this blood sir? Roman Polanski: You didn't see my house last summer...
polanski made this after his wife was murdered by the manson family and his feelings on this come through very strongly in the film.
one of the more memorable shakespeare adaptations
The best thing about this film is the soundtrack by the Third Ear Band. Creepy, spine-chilling stuff.
"Is this a dagger I see before me..." You bet it is! Super good film! Not much more to say...."...something wicked this way comes"
One of the best Shakespearean interpretations, with all the gore, sex, and spookiness that Shakespeare would have thrown in if he could have gotten away with it.
As delighted as one can be when a high school teacher says ' and tomorrow, Roman Polanski!', this film lived up to my expectations. I enjoyed it, and the lovely scenery was neat too!
It's Shakespeare, so it's worth a look. I broke my Polanski boycott to watch this, but I probably won't see it again. The Orson Welles Macbeth is better.
Wow. I was expecting a lot of blood, and while it may seem unnecessary, it belongs there, in a twisted kind of way.
Watch for the end when Macbeth gets beheaded and then his body miraculously faces a new direction to tumble down the stairs.
great film as well as a great book film is better then the book i would say would recomend this film
Amazing, it follows the script and provides a magnificent visual representation of the play. Although the cave scenes were rather disturbing, they were perhaps necessary. I found Finch's acting to be grandiose, same could be said with Annis, as well as the rest of the cast. The setting was greatly fitting. The music added to the excellently assembled atmospehre.
After I saw this movie Macbeth became my fav Shakesperean play. It is bloody and gritty, as only Polanski could do it.
Well made, certainly, but lacking entertainment value. Blood wasn't something lacking, assured. Lots of flash and splash, but in a shakespearen movie, much of what they say is important and I feel a bit was lost.
How do our teachers get away with showing us R-rated films? Seriously. But anyway, I can't say I enjoyed it. It had it's moments, but come on.. how much blood can you put in a movie?
Not great, not bad. If you want to see Macbeth on film, there isn't much choice aside from Roman Polanski's version. Don't go out of your way to see it, but if you happen to stumble across it and you've just been dying to see a Macbeth movie (. . . riiight . . .) by all means, enjoy.
