Heavily stylised, this film is basically a stunt film with very little substance until its final few scenes kick the film into more engaging, interesting territory. Worth watching just because the whole trilogy has influenced so much other stuff I guess.
While the muted tone and long build up may grate the viewers patience, Mad Max is still a satisfying action epic with gorgeous visual aesthetics and pulse pounding action.
Do you rememeber when Mel Gibson was awesome? I do. And this movie showcases some of his awesomeness. Complete with proper Aussie accent. Great, awesome plot, great characters, well written, gritty and mean spirited. Fantastic. I would love to see an Asian Shock Cinema remake of this. How awesome would that be?
Development was too slow for me, but I figured it was probably because I was anticipating Mel in the aussie ford coupe :P The location's beautiful, I thought the cast was actually pretty good (those big bulging eyes creeped the hell outta me). I hated the soundtrack though, it was just all over the place! I'm adding this under torture devices based only on the soundtrack... otherwise, can't wait to catch 2 and 3, the movie definitely built up an appetite for more.
One of Australia's most iconic films is a small action flick made on a low budget but has some great car chases and is obviously influenced by Kubrick (A Clockwork Orange) and Scorsese (Taxi Driver). It shot Mel Gibson into the stratosphere.
Wow, when was this made '79 or something? Oh my gosh, nobody makes movies like this anymore! Max is one my favorite guy movie heros now. The action was great! It was supensfull and creative. I liked the idea of the hand hanging on the back of there car, that was scary! What was with the guy and girl that was always naked? They were weird, but they introduced us into how violent the gang was. It seemed that it took a long time for Jessie and the kid to die, and then the movie rushed to have the whole gang killed, but it showed that Max was not happy when they killed it his wife and kid and the gang totally underestimated how vicious Max can be when it comes to revenge. It was pretty graphic when they shot his leg and drove over his arm. I was like OUCH! I would've so crapped in my pants if somebody did that to me. Great movie, intresting and good action.
Un Mel Gibson jeune mais déjà convaicant. Un scénario désormais entré dans la légende. Une image, un grain qui n'ont pas vieilli mais donnent un "goût" à ce post-nuke de référence.
Awesome car chase/car crash scenes. Not sure why the world of the film is always described as "post-apocalyptic" because there was plenty of civilisation in the land. I loved that Mel Gibson went on a full-on revenge-fest (most films these days will have the hero show mercy upon the bad guys, not wanting to come down to their level) - by the end, the biker gang were all dead by his hand and his methods were sweet. Great ozploitation mixed with camp glory. What more could you want?
I like the car chase and crash scenes, especially the ones in the beginning. The villians were awesome and amusing, and their names were cool. Toecutter. the Night Rider.
I love post-apocalyptic stuff perhaps because I was raised with the threat of nuclear annihilation hanging over my head, and these stories provide a kind of hope for survival of our species. The Max series is a brutal and bleak one, but people do survive and this trilogy is perhaps even more relevant today as the predominant issue in Max?s dystopian future is fuel. The main fight between the good guys and the bad is over gas. He who controls the gas will control the power and transportation. Max in the form of a dead gorgeous Mel Gibson is a roving Sheriff complete with a badass car and wicked cool leather outfit.
My all time favorite movie. This movie set my bar for all action car chase movies and none have exceeded it YET. All time cult classic that will forever live in my heart and dreams.
Gibson's breakout role...rollicking good action across the Aussie plains...violent..great camerawork and some humor ..all in all entertaining and original for its day...
