i love hinise movies.
some of the best fighting scenes, ninja thats use grappling hooks to fly through valleys. huge moving fortresses. and my favorite asian action movie cliche, One dude swatting down thousands of arrows with a spear.
Do not mistake this for a simple minded action flick. While there's some breathtaking battle scenes towards the end, and a few fights now and then, this is foremost a drama. It feels like we get a privileged peak inside the forbidden palace, with all the intrigue and scandals tha...( read more)
Well, i didn't get so much of this movie. Strong colours and cool costumes, weird plot.
Amazing visuals; the sets, the costumes, etc. Is life so cheap in Chinese culture that no one bats an eye that so many are killed?
Gorgeous sets and costumes can't mask a slightly over familiar plot which doesn't grip like Zhang's previous efforts. The palace setting also robs the film of an epic feel.
lots of conspiricy, people killing each other. reminds me of shades children (a book by garth nix,) the way the rolaty use their armies for arguements between themselves.
A window into the Chinese culture and way of storytelling... It does have English subtitles ..
Visually stunning and highly detailed historic romp but not sure whether the overly coloured sets and mannerisms will make up for the lack of plot depth given repeated viewing.
Gourmet meal for your eyes and i dont know why people bash the plot so much i thought it was engaging and refreshingly lacking a sugar coated ending
There is a scale that only the Chinese could achieve to this epic family drama which goes totally overboard with all too eye soaring colours,
An insane story of a royally messed family. The addition of artistic action sequences makes this movie very entertaining. This is a very good redemption for the director after making the not so good Hero and House of Flying Daggers.
While the movie is beautiful and the action exciting its hard to recommend with so many characters that are immoral. Would have been better with good guys.
Immense effort was put into the sets with lots of details and colour display. Gong Li fitted the role perfectly and Jay did well for a green horn. Towards the end it looked like the Chinese version of LOTR though. Some effects look fake too.
Visually this film is amazing, Li Gongs performance is fantastic and Chow Yun-Fat ...is so powerful
Very similar to The Lion in Winter. Everybody is against the father, and the father can do nothing to stop the destruction of his own family. Wonderfully filmed. Fantastic story and acting.
There is striking use of colour in this film but it is so ridiculous that it is almost a parody of the genre. I had high hopes for this as I loved 'Crouching Tiger', 'Fearlesss' and 'Hero', but I was ultimately very disappointed.
this movie is very pretty and full of some serious Shakespearean drama [dude sleeping with his step mom and his half sister tries to stab himself in the aorta - misses - and is later murdered by his half brother, whose father then takes revenge on and beats to death with his belt...( read more)
woah, what a battle, very good movie about one of Chinees empire, and chinas history movie is a kick ass, but i must admit i some point of movie i wanted to turn it off but fortunly i didn't (it was some a lot of romantic moments)
Loads of bling, too much talking, not enough fighting.Everyone loves a ninja.
I bet that the movie would've unfolded not so badly if there weren't too many big shot names in it.
Jay's stony (kayu) performance brought down the whole thing.
Word of advise to him, "Go back to singing!!"
Not a bad epic about the folly of war and the disintegration of one family under the weigt of unrequited love, unforgivable betrayals, and a never-ending thirst of power. Gong Li is exquisite.
love these movies, subtitles is never a problem providing theres lots of action! :P
Intense with great acting and a great story. Of course like all foreign films this one should be watched in its original language. Mandirin is such a beautiful language that puts english to shame.
Interesting. Gotta love Chinese Epics. Beautiful, a lil over the top, and just plain... interesting.
