  • March 12, 2008
JAY ROX!!! But movie quite boring...
  • March 11, 2008
some of the best fighting scenes, ninja thats use grappling hooks to fly through valleys. huge moving fortresses. and my favorite asian action movie cliche, One dude swatting down thousands of arrows with a spear.
  • March 9, 2008
it was all right, but I woudn't buy it
  • March 8, 2008
Not the best of Zhang Yimou but still worth the watch.
  • March 8, 2008
    hot!!!!!! i love this movie!

Do not mistake this for a simple minded action flick. While there's some breathtaking battle scenes towards the end, and a few fights now and then, this is foremost a drama. It feels like we get a privileged peak inside the forbidden palace, with all the intrigue and scandals tha...( read more)t the royal family has to offer. Some of Asias best talent stars in this movie, most known to the west is the magnificent Chow Yun-Fat and beautiful Gong Li. The fight sequences are filmed in the same matters as "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers". Beautiful and impossible. The last star eludes because I can't seem to catch the morality of the story. It's also a few things that I don't like, but can't quite put my finger on.

Well, i didn't get so much of this movie. Strong colours and cool costumes, weird plot.
  • February 23, 2008
Amazing visuals; the sets, the costumes, etc. Is life so cheap in Chinese culture that no one bats an eye that so many are killed?
  • February 23, 2008
Gorgeous sets and costumes can't mask a slightly over familiar plot which doesn't grip like Zhang's previous efforts. The palace setting also robs the film of an epic feel.
  • February 23, 2008
lots of conspiricy, people killing each other. reminds me of shades children (a book by garth nix,) the way the rolaty use their armies for arguements between themselves.
  • February 21, 2008
A window into the Chinese culture and way of storytelling... It does have English subtitles ..
  • February 21, 2008
A gorgeous ,well acted, and hideously tragic film.
  • February 19, 2008
Visually stunning and highly detailed historic romp but not sure whether the overly coloured sets and mannerisms will make up for the lack of plot depth given repeated viewing.
  • February 15, 2008
Gourmet meal for your eyes and i dont know why people bash the plot so much i thought it was engaging and refreshingly lacking a sugar coated ending
  • February 15, 2008
    the fight scenes are amazing
  • February 14, 2008
IT WAS A GOOD MOVIE IT WAS CRAZY THE FAMILY WAS REAL MESSED UP
  • February 11, 2008
There is a scale that only the Chinese could achieve to this epic family drama which goes totally overboard with all too eye soaring colours,
  • February 10, 2008
Absolutely stunning, but kind of unexpected.
  • February 10, 2008
An insane story of a royally messed family. The addition of artistic action sequences makes this movie very entertaining. This is a very good redemption for the director after making the not so good Hero and House of Flying Daggers.
  • February 9, 2008
While the movie is beautiful and the action exciting its hard to recommend with so many characters that are immoral. Would have been better with good guys.
  • February 8, 2008
    This was a little slow.
  • February 8, 2008
Immense effort was put into the sets with lots of details and colour display. Gong Li fitted the role perfectly and Jay did well for a green horn. Towards the end it looked like the Chinese version of LOTR though. Some effects look fake too.
  • February 7, 2008
Visually this film is amazing, Li Gongs performance is fantastic and Chow Yun-Fat ...is so powerful
  • February 5, 2008
Very similar to The Lion in Winter. Everybody is against the father, and the father can do nothing to stop the destruction of his own family. Wonderfully filmed. Fantastic story and acting.
  • February 5, 2008
This movie is almost literally eyecandy, sometimes it almost hurts to watch. The story in itself is pretty weak, but Li Gongs performance makes up for it.

There is striking use of colour in this film but it is so ridiculous that it is almost a parody of the genre. I had high hopes for this as I loved 'Crouching Tiger', 'Fearlesss' and 'Hero', but I was ultimately very disappointed.

this movie is very pretty and full of some serious Shakespearean drama [dude sleeping with his step mom and his half sister tries to stab himself in the aorta - misses - and is later murdered by his half brother, whose father then takes revenge on and beats to death with his belt...( read more), his solid gold belt (pimpin')]
The bustiers were a little much but go China with your cleavage promoting blockbusters.
  • January 31, 2008
Second best movie in the world.
  • January 30, 2008
Amazing battle scenes with brilliant color throughout the movie.
  • January 29, 2008
woah, what a battle, very good movie about one of Chinees empire, and chinas history movie is a kick ass, but i must admit i some point of movie i wanted to turn it off but fortunly i didn't (it was some a lot of romantic moments)
  • January 29, 2008
Loads of bling, too much talking, not enough fighting.Everyone loves a ninja.
  • January 28, 2008
I bet that the movie would've unfolded not so badly if there weren't too many big shot names in it.
Jay's stony (kayu) performance brought down the whole thing.
Word of advise to him, "Go back to singing!!"
  • January 28, 2008
Not a bad epic about the folly of war and the disintegration of one family under the weigt of unrequited love, unforgivable betrayals, and a never-ending thirst of power. Gong Li is exquisite.
  • January 26, 2008
Got thru about 20 mins, then had to shut this one off..
  • January 26, 2008
Such a BADASS movie. Everything about it was AWESOME!!!!

  • January 22, 2008
Intense with great acting and a great story. Of course like all foreign films this one should be watched in its original language. Mandirin is such a beautiful language that puts english to shame.
  • January 22, 2008
