March 11, 2008some of the best fighting scenes, ninja thats use grappling hooks to fly through valleys. huge moving fortresses. and my favorite asian action movie cliche, One dude swatting down thousands of arrows with a spear.

February 23, 2008Gorgeous sets and costumes can't mask a slightly over familiar plot which doesn't grip like Zhang's previous efforts. The palace setting also robs the film of an epic feel.

February 10, 2008An insane story of a royally messed family. The addition of artistic action sequences makes this movie very entertaining. This is a very good redemption for the director after making the not so good Hero and House of Flying Daggers.

February 8, 2008Immense effort was put into the sets with lots of details and colour display. Gong Li fitted the role perfectly and Jay did well for a green horn. Towards the end it looked like the Chinese version of LOTR though. Some effects look fake too.

February 5, 2008Very similar to The Lion in Winter. Everybody is against the father, and the father can do nothing to stop the destruction of his own family. Wonderfully filmed. Fantastic story and acting.

February 5, 2008This movie is almost literally eyecandy, sometimes it almost hurts to watch. The story in itself is pretty weak, but Li Gongs performance makes up for it.

February 4, 2008There is striking use of colour in this film but it is so ridiculous that it is almost a parody of the genre. I had high hopes for this as I loved 'Crouching Tiger', 'Fearlesss' and 'Hero', but I was ultimately very disappointed.

January 28, 2008Not a bad epic about the folly of war and the disintegration of one family under the weigt of unrequited love, unforgivable betrayals, and a never-ending thirst of power. Gong Li is exquisite.

January 22, 2008Intense with great acting and a great story. Of course like all foreign films this one should be watched in its original language. Mandirin is such a beautiful language that puts english to shame.
