Opulent and inspired, Yimou Zhang continues to wow me with color and composition. Slow at the start, but shot in such a compelling way it doesn't get boring. The ending is classic Chinese tragedy.

this movie is beautiful. The palace, the scenes, the wardrobe, keren. Jadi pengen ke forbidden city.

Tedious, plot-less drivel trying to cash in on the success of Hero and House Of Flying Daggers. It's an "eastern", but made specifically for western audiences - hence it's failures. It's full of melodrama, the palace looks like it's made of sweet-wrappers and play-doh, everyone o...( read more)

Wow, what a visually amazing work of cinematography. And talk about your proverbial cast of thousands. The climactic battle scene is just beyond epic. I don't think I've ever seen war portrayed quite this way. A very fluid mass of humanity pours across the screen, like two li...( read more)

It is so visually stunning that it can be compared to Chushingura (1962). The acting and the long slow plot, however, still have much room for growth. Gong Li, however, is still as amazing as ever. The completely lavishing and wastefulness for the emperor and empress can be seen ...( read more)

Zhang Yimou started with the personal, now he is smarter and critiques chinese ontology and beliefs thru allegory, just say it clearly already!

Very gripping film, almost to the point of eerie realism. Betrayal, back-stabbing, assassination, adultery, family tragedy.

It's the latest movie from Zhang Yimou (director of House of Flying Daggers and Hero) who tries to blend martial arts with soap opera. I was disappointed with this, perhaps it's because I couldn't bother reading the subtitles this time around and stuck with the very average dub. ...( read more)

This story makes some of Shakespeare's more bloddy works, seem like a Harlequin romance novel!
Murder, intrigue, deceit and treachery abound in this visually stunning film.
You need only look at the cast to get a feel for what awaits you. But nothing can prepare you for ...( read more)
