This movie is absolutely gorgeous. Even if I didn't have any kind of translation, I could still watch this movie. The set and costume designs are amazing.

Zhang Yimou started with the personal, now he is smarter and critiques chinese ontology and beliefs thru allegory, just say it clearly already!

Typical Chines movie, it was interesting though. The poor Empress had lots of suffering to dill with. Loved the fighting scenes, they were amazing.

A family drama, but this time it involves an imperial family of an empire.

Seriously, worst Chinese movie ever! Totally a waste of my time!

conceptia despre viata....iubire...tradare...orgolii...lupta pt supravietuire si pt putere, dar si pt femei
  • March 3, 2009
Very gripping film, almost to the point of eerie realism. Betrayal, back-stabbing, assassination, adultery, family tragedy.

It's the latest movie from Zhang Yimou (director of House of Flying Daggers and Hero) who tries to blend martial arts with soap opera. I was disappointed with this, perhaps it's because I couldn't bother reading the subtitles this time around and stuck with the very average dub. ...( read more)

The richly detailed city and clothing is over the top - there can be such a thing as too much detail that it attempts to cover up for what it lacks. With every room containing golden imagery it looks too samey and takes up 3/4 of the movie. If you don't pay attention to the conversations you can easily lose the plot. Basically it's about betrayal and family matters. The action scenes whilst okay don't show up until the final few remaining minutes and feel "been there, done that".

If you like your action films and enjoyed House of Flying Daggers, Hero and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - be very cautious of this new film. It's one of this year's yawners

The Curse Of The Golden Flower is a historical epic starring Chow Yun-Fat as a Chinese emperor who rules both his lands and family with an iron fist. A plot to assassinate his empress results in an attempted coup to wrest power from his grasp. This story has a lot of potential fo...( read more)r political machinations, scheming and the kind of epic, heroic battles you'd expect from Zhang Yimou. The costumes and sets are of a scale and splendour it is impossible to ignore and his eye for aesthetic beauty is as evident as ever. But it seemed to me that the actors had been demoted to nothing more than elaborate mannequins on which to hang these incredible creations, arranged to make the most attractively composed images, rather than to facilitate the narrative or create empathy or even interest for the viewer. The characters and their relationships are barely fleshed out, and I never felt I'd got to know any of them or their personal motivations at all. Gong Li is the only one to wrest any screen time away from her sumptuous surroundings and she was always fighting a losing battle for attention with her quite hypnotic cleavage. I think Zhang was trying to create a Shakespearean tragedy, but his eye was so unwaveringly concerned with the style of the film rather than the substance, the result is little more than a collection of pretty pictures.

Gong Li was amazing in this. Heartbreaking story, but I'm kinda bored with Chinese movies' tragic ending. Get a life, people.

not good to be from a royal family. even worse to be married with someone from it

This story makes some of Shakespeare's more bloddy works, seem like a Harlequin romance novel!

Murder, intrigue, deceit and treachery abound in this visually stunning film.

You need only look at the cast to get a feel for what awaits you. But nothing can prepare you for ...( read more)the beauty of the sets and costumes that will overwhelm your senses.

Be forwarned that while there are some great fight scenes and excellent special effects...that is not the main focus of this film. It is first and foremost a powerful character drama.

    A visionary NOTHING.
  • December 27, 2008
Amazing battle scenes and drama, a great movie.
  • December 24, 2008
A great movie with a deep plot and plenty of twist!
  • December 24, 2008
Do not expect much fight scene. Somehow they talk very soft. Could hardly hear what they say. Most are talk scene and you have to listen hard to understand the story.
  • December 21, 2008
over-hyped, over the top and really, pretty much pointless. jay chou can't act. one and a half consolation stars for the director's attempt at making something different from the usual period fare and his artistic vision.
  • December 12, 2008
This film is a work of art, perfection! the story is so interesting! not that much fighting, but i belive any more would ruin it!
  • December 8, 2008
A little slow, but still a great sotry and amazing cinamatogrpahy!
  • December 8, 2008
Yun-Fat Chow and Li Gong star in this disgustingly high-budget epic chinese action/drama, which unlike many others of its kind puts more emphasis on the plot than on just the action. Though it would seem that that might be a good thing- that it would lead to a better balance of g...( read more)enre, unfortunately the storyline is a little too draggy and piled up, and I found myself wanting more action and less melodrama. The visuals are beyond what cinema should be capable of, and even though they are stunningly vibrant and intricate, they are also far too full-on and kind of there for the sake of it. Impressively well-acted and for sure not the worst film of its kind, but it's more of an experience than proper film, and I doubt I will ever watch it again...

A feast for the eyes. Great story of a dysfunctional royal family in Ancient China. Loved it.
  • November 25, 2008
Amazing settings have a great impact on the action scenes and story... Yimou Zhang is good director and stage designer, obviously the holy city is very offer a huge stage!
  • November 8, 2008
colorful with lots of surprise events that makes u wonder and share a tear....
  • November 6, 2008
OMG!! Beautiful, colorful, intriguing, great story and casting. So many twist and turns. It is an epic masterpiece.
  • November 4, 2008
The costumes were amazing. This should definitely have beaten Marie Antoinette in that category at the Oscars, but what the hell was up with the technicolor rainbow tie-dye palace?!
  • November 2, 2008
For all of it's twists and turns, ultimately this film is about a screwed up family.

The actual story itself is not as strong as it should be. The build up and the hints that are dropped throughout the fairly sedate first hour promise so much but at the end of the day, could...( read more) I really buy into the motivations of our main characters? Probably not as much as I would have wanted. That being said, it's still a really intrigiung tale.

The visuals are what sells this film. I can honestly say that I haven't seen anything quite as lavish as this in a long time. Gorgeous can't even begin to describe the sets and costumes etc. The visuals make this worth a watch on their own.

Chow is fine but it is Gong Li who shoulders most of the film and she is excellent (not to mention breathtaking!).

Overall, a good watch where the story doesn't really deserve the visuals that support it.

    fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • October 28, 2008
a beautiful movie to watch. The plot is ok , maybe not the best of this genre but worth seeing. I am not sure why this was given an R rating ......
  • October 22, 2008
Gorgeous to look at. Shakespearean in scope... or Greek tragedy. It's all in there. An amazing movie to watch. But watch the subtitled one.
  • October 22, 2008
    Some beautiful fight's choreographies!
Beautiful also r the costumes, sets, and landscapes.
    Finally, the script is good.
  • October 16, 2008
Good movie . . . wish the ending was different.
  • October 12, 2008
I could not take it seriously, mostly due to Chow Yun-fat's hair
