Love the show! It's so extravagant, was very pleasing to see all those flamboyant decorations being thrown around. Strong cast.

    Damn.
Well I have to say that this is one of Zhang's worst films. And I was really sad (I guess) that he had made this film he usually makes films that stand out and are more enjoyable than this.
Well, it's bueatifully set. The scenery, costumes and the palace, unrealistically ...( read more)stunning. The action scenes are enough to please fans wanting to see another 'Hero' (to some certain extent.)
Acting was flat, nothing to blow your mind. Just your ordinary below average dramatic Chinese flick.
But is Zhang Yimou is one of your favourites watch it... actually, I don't really think you should, as if you are like me you'll be just as disappointed as I am right now.

first of all, jay chou isn't made for acting and he shouldn't be in this film. 2nd, there's no plotline, only a gr8 bunch of beautiful costumes and props and ppl in the film. the actors (gong li and chow yun fat) couldn't use their acting skills bcos there's no plotline. and basi...( read more)cally it's a pirated version of lei ru so it's like totally copied. zhang yimou's films are getting worse and worse.

Probably my least favorite of Zhang's films so far. However, I find that his films become far better after a second or third viewing.

This films is much more narrative and drama based than his last two efforts (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), but that's not necessarily...( read more) a bad thing as Gong Li plays the role of melodramatic emperess very well.

Of course Zhang's "over-use" of color and symmetry is present as well and I think this time, his efforts are overstated and becomes almost sensory overload with the colors; no discernable theme, just a mess of colors on the screen at all times.

The fighting sequences are a tad over the top and focus more on the art than the reality or brutality of war.

Not a must-see (except for true fans), but still an enjoyable film with a very Shakespearean feel to the overall storyline.

Forget abt the criticisms to do with the many boobs, this film is so theatrically oppressive and garish that it makes sense to have the boobs overkill. Excellent homage to the original play. By far the best of this genre.

Amazing cinematography and the sheer scale was overwhelming! Well worth the watch!

Excessively Grand. - Slow Build Up, Epic Finale. - Father Knows Best.
  • December 30, 2006
the story is simple enough. but hell! Jay Chou is one bad actor. in all his scenes, he looks like a spaz. literally. idiotic. too many colours, mostly golden. blinding really. Gong Li was great. and so was Chow Yun-Fat. but really, i dont think that in the Tang Dynasty, where fat...( read more) girls were considered beautiful, but whatever, their clothes were THAT revealing? doubt so. honestly, i was trying to stifle my laughter throughout the film. at least it's entertaining. lived up to my expectations. i hadnt thought much of it anyway. Definitely not one of Zhang Yi Mou's best. wouldve rather watched High School Musical. ok no, not really.

Incest and cleavage, that's right, the two themes of this years epic chinese costume movie. From the director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers, this is his new film, although it did not get me as interested as those previous films. On the plus side you have Chow Yun-Fat as the...( read more) emperor who doesn't take shit from anyone. He and his wife are apparently terrible parents from how the story reveals itself, because their children have...well problems. The movie of course looks great. The art and costume direction is handled well, but that is expected from this type of movie. There are some decent fight scenes, but way too much in terms of CGI this time around. What makes it decent enough as a film is the mix of a Shakespear/Soap Opera tragedy plot, that doesn't get too interesting until the final parts of the movie.

    very good..... @_@..

Great setting! I think it's closed to perfect. Chow Yun-Fat & Gong Li, I can say there's nothing to criticize bout, they're brilliant! Jay Chou, too much to comment. I would actually give it a 5stars if there's no him. Well he might be a good song writer, but actor? He's definite...( read more)ly not to the level to fit in this movie yet! I watched it twice in theater, once in Singapore and once in Malaysia. I really don't have a clue why Malaysia wants to translate it to Cantonese! It actually made this movie worth bout 2stars cause it lost most of the sound effects, especially their tones which is actually influence a lot. Anyway, it's a good piece.

was expecting more martial arts, but good story telling
  • December 25, 2006
Beautiful setting and Art directions.. Great acting (Jay's acting improved! but the imaging doesn't really suit Tang Dynasty), great visuals, and Great feel! Thumb's up! I love the ending.
  • December 25, 2006
intrigue, suspense, good stagework, good plot development. 'Hero' was definitely better, but this comes close.
  • December 25, 2006
Stunning movie, a visual treat, everything is so elaborate and beautiful, especially the set. Gong Li shines like no other in her role. Jay Chou doesn't do well as a conflicted son, and comes off rather rigid. Chow Yun-Fat does amazingly well too. The story is unique and quite u...( read more)npredictable. An excellent movie, a must-watch.

wow, this has got to be the most OTT movie I've seen in recent years. it totally overwhelmed the story and the excellent performance by Gong Li, Liu Ye and Chow Yun-Fat. Jay Chou was another distracting element, he was terrible. I wished Zhang Yi Mou could have been more restrain...( read more)ed like what he did with Hero. just very disappointing.

    juz 'shang ying"...very nice..
  • December 22, 2006
Great visual effect. And the performance of Gong Li is really great.
  • December 20, 2006
Fantastic art direction, beautiful colours! The only setback is, Zhang still not extremely good at action/war scenes, we see the mass, but can't feel it being grand.
  • December 19, 2006
JAY was so cool!! but he dun really seems to be suitable for oldies
