Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower) Reviews and Ratings

I could not take it seriously, mostly due to Chow Yun-fat's hair

If nothing else, this film is an absolutely astonishing visual experience. The ornate detail and lavish beauty of imperial China's royal family is portrayed in a stunning and magnificent way. Almost every frame of this film could be considered a work of fine art. In addition to t...( read more)his, throw in an original and captivating plot that could be described as Shakespearian in it's complexity. Deception, murder, scandalous affairs and secrets abound. Chow Yun-Fat gives an excellent performance as the villainous Emperor and all-knowing father figure who is attempting to slowly poison his wife as revenge for an affair with her step-son, the crown prince. Since the setting is in ancient imperial China, of course there are ninja's, kung foo, and an excellent climactic epic battle scene, all of which are quite entertaining. My only complaint was with the dubbed voice acting which, as usual, was sub-par. If you have a choice, I would recommend watching the sub-titled version. Even if it is in a foreign language, the original actors almost always give a better performance in these types of films. Either way though, this epic and extravagant film is not be missed.

Now this is a trippy movie. It keeps you guessing until the very end. Do not watch unless you do not mind subtitles. I love the ending song.

I always found Chow Yun Fat annoying, and him playing a despicable villain in this film makes him more unlikable. This tragic film about family and power is something worth watching just because of the colors and visuals alone. I have noticed that all of Zhang Yimou's wuxia films...( read more) have sad endings with all of the protagonists having tragic deaths and the antagonists still alive.

As how Zhang Yimou's movies have been recently, this was an ultimate visual fest, in fact, the gold and silver will leave you totally dazed. The story itself however, is very simple yet undeniably dark as all the characters conspire and plot against each other. Some may argue tha...( read more)t the plot is silly and unbelievable, however everything is choreographed and directed very well , and with exceptional performances from Gong Li and Chow Yuen Fat, this film is very worth watching.

  • September 16, 2008
this was ok but i had a hard time getting through the begining
  • September 13, 2008
this movie was nicely directed. there is a hidden message within all the actions and dramas of the royal family, which was purposely not made obvious for the soul reason of testing the viewer. i actually didn't see it until my mum told me. initially i didn't think it was all that...( read more) great until i realised the meaning; i thought it was just about an eminent family of the ancient times and the power the father always has, but no... acting was great i really enjoyed gong li, i have never seen her before. yimou zhang is very talented.

  • September 8, 2008
The tragic excellence is haunting, all the blood spills weakening... This movie just compels one to kneel before perfection.

Royalty and all it's hidden filth always makes for good tragedy...^^

I was disappointed to be honest, I had hoped this would be as good as Hero. Visually it is stunning, bright and colourful with great attention to detail. However on the action and fighting side it is a let down. Not much happens for the first hour, there are some good fights towa...( read more)rds the end but didn't live up to expectation!

Love the plot! The ending is so sad.

No sé como describir ésta película, inicia lentamente, ofreciendo escenarios pulcros cómo es característico de éste género, pero termina cómo una masacre o carnicería, un giro que no me esperaba.

Beautiful cinematography contrasted with a story filled with betrayal.
  • August 23, 2008
not too interesting until the final half. the first half is iterations of the same forbidden city set. not for those who want something fast paced.
  • August 22, 2008
Brilliant production design. it will floor you. the story however may not. there is plenty of drama but it all feels fairly well-trodden.
  • August 21, 2008
this is one crazy ass movie that is great.
  • August 12, 2008
    Beautiful sumptuous Chinese drama.

This is a movie from the director of Hero and Flying daggers so i thought it might be a good movie and the reviews have been on top. The first half had a slow tempo and i had wanted some more action scenes but more towards the end there was really nice big fights tho. The movie s...( read more)trength are its great and engaging story instead of action. Along with the beautiful setup of the palace , costumes makes it nice to look at. Overall i liked it but i think i prefer a bit more of action. Enjoy

This movie is just sooooo good and not because of its ocassional action scenes or anything. Nope...its awesomeness comes from a great storyline and good dialogue. Wow! how many secrets can a family have especially a royal family??? The film's colors were so vibrant...made me feel...( read more) like I was on an acid trip the entire time. lol.

Chow Yun-Fat is so ruthless in this movie it made me really hate his character which is weird since I love him in all his movies! lol but yeah I think everyone needs to give this film a try.
  • August 5, 2008
I love Jay Chou! but...this was boring... :(
  • August 5, 2008
The colours and sets were wonderful but that was all that was wonderful. The story went slower than the tortoise in that race he had with the hare. Shame really.
  • August 4, 2008
a very beautiful film. i love the way the colors were used. it really shows how one secret can tear a family apart.
  • August 2, 2008

After a while, I got an eyesore watching this with all the gold going on. It was a beautiful film, but the story, how it was executed, not quite. and I'm not a huge fan of Chow Yun-Fat.
  • July 27, 2008
    Beautiful cinematography
  • July 27, 2008
Stunninly beautiful visuals, intriguing story of treachery and deception, set during Imperial China
  • July 25, 2008
Foreign, Chinese. This was a good movie! The colors in this movie is amazing; it's just a palette for the eye, it's so beautiful! It's about an inter-family struggle for power, in the Tang Dynasty, in China. This movie was done brilliantly and it's amazing how beautiful this ...( read more)movie is. I definitely and highly recommend it!

Very elaborate and beautifully filmed. The action scenes and the cinematography are of course what you expect from modern Chinese cinema, but the chemistry between the leads make it both believable and entertaining.
  • July 20, 2008
    Totally unlikeable characters.
  • July 19, 2008
I had this checked that I wanted to see it. Well, I finally got to see it curtesy of Encore Action. I found it sad yet very provoking every sense that a human has.
  • July 16, 2008
While it looks very very nice, and the acting is quite good, the story was mediocre at best and the ending was COMPLETE SHIT!!

So disappointing because I adore Zhang Yimou's other work!!
  • July 16, 2008
Number 2 on my favorites list. Dysfunction, betrayal, incest, love, hate, and death. all to the background of a beautiful, colorful palace. The colors in this film are amazing and provide a perfect backdrop to the destruction of an imperial family.
  • July 14, 2008
he sets and the cinematography are stunning. All sorts of eye candy :) Twisted story, good story.
  • July 13, 2008
You can always expect something from Zhan Yi Mou....

This is a feast for the eyes! The incredible sets, scenery and heaving boosoms are jaw dropping. If there were say 10 minutes more of the kung fu action, this would get a perfect score. The story is Shakesperean and filled with surprises. I didn't see the ending coming, though I ...( read more)guess I should've known, these films don't end with a happily ever after. Great performances once again from Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li, who may be the most beautiful woman in the movies not named Halle or Beyonce(that body really is bootylicious)

I can appreciate the numerous months spent on costume and set design that went into Curse of the Golden Flower without a doubt. But in the end all this movie was is Shakespeare with some sparse wire fights. The performances were okay but that ending was utter horseshit. Go watch ...( read more)Hero or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon instead. Granted there aren't as many push-up bras and hypnotic cleavage around in those movies, but you probably won't fall asleep out of boredom.
