This is a movie from the director of Hero and Flying daggers so i thought it might be a good movie and the reviews have been on top. The first half had a slow tempo and i had wanted some more action scenes but more towards the end there was really nice big fights tho. The movie s...( read more)trength are its great and engaging story instead of action. Along with the beautiful setup of the palace , costumes makes it nice to look at. Overall i liked it but i think i prefer a bit more of action. Enjoy

This movie is just sooooo good and not because of its ocassional action scenes or anything. Nope...its awesomeness comes from a great storyline and good dialogue. Wow! how many secrets can a family have especially a royal family??? The film's colors were so vibrant...made me feel...( read more) like I was on an acid trip the entire time. lol.

Chow Yun-Fat is so ruthless in this movie it made me really hate his character which is weird since I love him in all his movies! lol but yeah I think everyone needs to give this film a try.

I love Jay Chou! but...this was boring... :(
  • August 5, 2008
The colours and sets were wonderful but that was all that was wonderful. The story went slower than the tortoise in that race he had with the hare. Shame really.
  • August 4, 2008
a very beautiful film. i love the way the colors were used. it really shows how one secret can tear a family apart.

After a while, I got an eyesore watching this with all the gold going on. It was a beautiful film, but the story, how it was executed, not quite. and I'm not a huge fan of Chow Yun-Fat.

    Beautiful cinematography
  • July 27, 2008
Stunninly beautiful visuals, intriguing story of treachery and deception, set during Imperial China

Foreign, Chinese. This was a good movie! The colors in this movie is amazing; it's just a palette for the eye, it's so beautiful! It's about an inter-family struggle for power, in the Tang Dynasty, in China. This movie was done brilliantly and it's amazing how beautiful this ...( read more)movie is. I definitely and highly recommend it!

Very elaborate and beautifully filmed. The action scenes and the cinematography are of course what you expect from modern Chinese cinema, but the chemistry between the leads make it both believable and entertaining.
  • July 20, 2008
    Totally unlikeable characters.

I had this checked that I wanted to see it. Well, I finally got to see it curtesy of Encore Action. I found it sad yet very provoking every sense that a human has.
  • July 16, 2008
While it looks very very nice, and the acting is quite good, the story was mediocre at best and the ending was COMPLETE SHIT!!

It makes you feel as if nothing happened, the guy you wanted to lose throughout the whole film essentially wins, and it makes you feel as if you've wast...( read more)ed your time.

So disappointing because I adore Zhang Yimou's other work!!

Number 2 on my favorites list. Dysfunction, betrayal, incest, love, hate, and death. all to the background of a beautiful, colorful palace. The colors in this film are amazing and provide a perfect backdrop to the destruction of an imperial family.
  • July 14, 2008
he sets and the cinematography are stunning. All sorts of eye candy :) Twisted story, good story.
  • July 13, 2008
You can always expect something from Zhan Yi Mou....
This is not a sensational film, but it met my expectation...and it reach Zhang's standard in previous movies...
Jay Chou is not a good actor...

This is a feast for the eyes! The incredible sets, scenery and heaving boosoms are jaw dropping. If there were say 10 minutes more of the kung fu action, this would get a perfect score. The story is Shakesperean and filled with surprises. I didn't see the ending coming, though I ...( read more)guess I should've known, these films don't end with a happily ever after. Great performances once again from Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li, who may be the most beautiful woman in the movies not named Halle or Beyonce(that body really is bootylicious)

I can appreciate the numerous months spent on costume and set design that went into Curse of the Golden Flower without a doubt. But in the end all this movie was is Shakespeare with some sparse wire fights. The performances were okay but that ending was utter horseshit. Go watch ...( read more)Hero or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon instead. Granted there aren't as many push-up bras and hypnotic cleavage around in those movies, but you probably won't fall asleep out of boredom.

what i can say is that "Curse of the Golden Flower" is "The Godfather" of our time plus so much visual beauty.

I think we've seen too many films like this one.

i think i saw this movie and it was good~!

this was fuckin stoopid. I've never seen so many Asian chicks with such big boobs. EVER. that's it. that's the plot. I can't even remember anything else. totally ridiculous.
  • June 20, 2008
    Beautiful and colorful visuals.
  • June 19, 2008
Some of the most breath-taking & just absolutely beautiful background sets designs ever in a film. So rich are the colors & exquisit details in this movie, that it requires multiple viewings just to be able to soak it all in. Once one can get passed that aspect of the film, it wi...( read more)ll become obvious that the sets are not a distraction, but an enhancement to the story. An enrichment that adds to the dialogue with an intesity that allows the ideas of what appears to be human pettiness behavior in a royal setting to be revealed as much grander in scope & concept.
And for a movie that can make someone as simple minded as myself come to a conclusion like that, that's definitely a statement to the power of it's artistry.

  • June 19, 2008
It was a pointless movie! The only thing that happened was that everyone died in the end. . .except Chow-Yun-Fat!

But, the whole setting of a Chinese palace was really pretty. And the costumes were cool.

I must admit that it was fairly predictable toward the ending but nonetheless a good plot.

Slow but absorbing, this tragedy has the power of a Shakespeare play with the beautiful (really, astounding) visuals of Zhang Yimou. This film has a wonderful costume and set design, which blows away all viewers, even if the intensely dramatic, bloody plot doesn't grab your inter...( read more)est. And, even if this intense dramatic style is too much for you, the films is full of unforgettable images, from beginning to end. "The Curse of the Golden Flower" is a powerful portrayal of the theatricality of power, of the loneliness of the tyrant, and of the way passions rule human relations; all this is told with the intensity typical of old-fashioned plays, but Yimou's exciting and seductive direction update this tale and make it equally entertaining and convincing, of course helped greatly by the presence of two impressive actors in the lead roles (Gong Li and Chow Yun-Fat). A masterpiece indeed, though perhaps it could've been better told; the direction is perfect, the plot not as deep as it should have.

Only one filmmaker exists that has the guts to tell a black tale about bad people set amongst a treasure for the eyes the likes of which you haven't seen before.

Not for a second did I think Yimou's third big budget picture and my least anticipated would make me feel like Hero a...( read more)nd House of Flying Daggers did. By the end of the movie I was stunned to realize I was wrong. Although my feelings for the movie are not as strong as those, my feeling wasn't the same either, which is good, because this movie is "ugly", set amongst a gorgeous backdrop which is the whole point. All three movies may be tragedies but this one is no romance.

And it's no action movie either. It's a simple story yet multi-faceted character drama. If you're looking for action, watch some Tony Jaa or something.

Wonderful epic movie from China, which is directed by Zhang Yimou. He has previously made the House of Flying Daggers (Flyvende Dolker) and the amazing Hero as well, and he has proved himself again. Some people will say that the story is inspired from William Shakespare.

The movie is full of colourful visuals, beautiful choreography and good story. A must see!

Nowhere near the brilliance of HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS.
  • May 27, 2008
magnificently acted and visually stunning, emotionally bereft of redemption - reminiscent of Greek classic tragedy or the grand drama of Shakespeare.
