    a lot of complication inside..

An overblown bore. I'm getting tired of Zhang's over-melodramatic theatrics.

8/10 This one, I admit, I've been advoiding for quite a while now. It looked like one of the multitudes of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon "clones, which although I like these kinda films, rarely are they even in the same league as the orinagal. So today, I saw it was going to ...( read more)be playing on the movie channels and decided to give it a try. I was very suprised to find that it not only wasn't a clone; it was a differnt style film all together. This one is about palace intregue and all the chaos that can snowball from it. Now I admit that a film about politics can put off some people. Without something to cut it with... it can be very, very, very, VERY boring. Don't worry, it's not only got a compelling story, it's got plenty of other things to spice it up: murder, martial arts, sex, incest, cival war, betrayal... These are just a few of the spices thrown into the mix. Another thing, although the film is very serious, it doesn't really take itself THAT seriously. In the end, after all the smoke clears, the servants (all 10,000 of them) rush in to clean up the mess. Flowers are brought in, carpets are thrown out... and in a few minutes, you'd never know what just went down. Then, off in the distance, you can hear, "12:00... It's the hour of the Purple Moose. Anyone that is still alive, it is time to start the festival."

It was just gorgeous and candy for your eyes. Not hard to expect from the maker of 'House of Flying Daggers.' The acting was great.Gong Li delivered a great performance as well as ...( read more)Chow Yun-Fat.Top 'A' Chinese cast. I thought the plot was great, rather sad,but great. It has some fantasic twists in it as well. An over all beautiful and tragic film.

Curse of the Golden Flower is a movie about a power struggle within the royal family. Like other Zhang Yimou films, this one is a visual treat to the eyes.

Curse of the Golden Flower is a powerful and tragic story, vividly realised through a barrage of dazzling colour radiating from beautifully composed images that are a masterclass in costume and set design.

The movie is surprisingly light in action, as Zhang Yimou instead opts ...( read more)to explore the intriguing intricate web of character relations, whose unhappy nature is conveyed by slow and longing camera movements, coupled with a series of close-ups of emotionally strained faces.

The result of this is a very slow first hour and one half. However, the developing drama gradually gathers momentum and eventually culminates in an explosion of blood-soaked hatred that unleashes Zhang Yimou's creativity, allowing the camera to swoop across the action encompassing the stunning battlefield with tremendous flair.

Curse of the Golden Flower requires some patience, but you are well rewarded by the conclusion of this fascinating story.

The queen is trapped between the love for her husbands first son and the love of her own sons. Her husband is dominating her and everyone else.

Iīve always been into this kind of movies, the tang dynasty and chinas history in general. I really think that this is a movies worth watching!

Li Gong plays an Empress in the late Tang dynasty who discovers that her husband The Emperor (Chow Yun Fat) is slowly poisoning her. Already upset by the recent end of an affair with her stepson, The Empress hatches a plan to kill The Emperor with the help of her own son. But as ...( read more)the plan is put in motion, each member of this incestuous circle discovers secrets and deceptions deeper than any ever imagined.

Curse of the Golden Flower renders words like 'lavish,' 'spectacle,' 'dramatic,' 'sumptuous,' 'richly detailed' and 'dysfunctional family'.......inadequate.
The physical battles are indeed stirring, but the heart really beats, in fact, the major conflicts in the film are intellectual and emotional, which enables a sense of release or catharsis when the fists start flying.
Curse of the Golden Flower is a tragedy in the classic sense, which is as devastating as it is entertaining.

To put a point to it, the lavish period costumes, operatic mise-en-scčne and ceremonial grandeur of Curse of the Golden Flower clashes fatally with the nuanced nastiness of modern marital discord.
While the film looks beautiful and the cinematography and staging by Xiaoding Zhao...( read more) is as magnificent as ever, Curse of the Golden Flower is the weakest of the class
