Marjorie Morningstar

Carolyn Jones, Claire Trevor, Ed Wynn, Everett Sloane, Gene Kelly, Martin Balsam, Martin Milner, Natalie Wood

Natalie Wood and Gene Kelly make a cute (if not exactly convincing) couple in this Hollywood soap-opera version of Herman Wouk's coming-of-age romance. French/Russian Natalie Wood is decidedly non-e...( read more  read more... )thnic as Marjorie Morgenstern, the starry-eyed Jewish college girl who falls in love with summer resort small-timer Gene Kelly (who never quite sells himself as a show-biz dreamer with limited talent). A stolid mix of modern, clear-eyed romance and old-fashioned melodrama, it nonetheless manages to slip in some frank (for 1958) discussions of sex and the single girl and sketch out an intriguing portrait of Jewish life in New York's upper crust between the romantic complications. Everett Sloane and Claire Trevor are excellent as Marjorie's success-obsessed parents, pre-Adam 12 Martin (Marty) Milner offers his boy-next-door charm as the former flunky turned Broadway success, and Ed Wynn is delightful as her eccentric uncle. --Sean Axmaker

Well produced melodrama. Natalie Wood is a little stiff in her acting, but Gene Kelly does well enough. Good story, but a little overly dramatic. Some of the music is outstanding.

As a Martin Milner fan, I love love love this movie. He gets to show off his acting chops in a romantic and non law enforcement role in a role that his much larger than "Sweet Smell of Success." The cast of this film is so strong, with everyone putting in great work. An enjoyable...( read more) movie.

This is probably my least favorite movie, because GENE played the role as being washed up in his career. Although he was excellent in the role, I just didn't want to picture the most talented tap man of all times as being on his last note of his career (in the movie). Natlie Wood...( read more) was very sweet in this movie as well. But it was worth watching just to see an older yet still handsome, sensual GENE.

It's good, it may not end the way I wanted it to, but it kind of makes its point in the movie, and I'd have to agree with it. Mostly the movie is about growing up, realizing things don't always go the way you want to. and making those tough decisions that you really didn't want t...( read more)o make. You'll see my point when you reach the end of the movie, it will all just click.

Gene Kelly and Natalie Wood are beautiful just to look at in this ol flick and one of her firsts as an adult. BUT the script is so SO very bad we were actually laughing at various points. I love Natalie - I love Gene - but this movie would be at the bottom of my list for either o...( read more)f their long list of films. P U is all I can say.
