In the capable hands of director Peter Weir, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is a seafaring adventure like no other, impeccably authentic, dynamically cast, and thrilling enough...( read more

Well done war movie. The trailer made it seem like an action movie. But, it really is a film about courage under fire. Great Russell Crowe performance that makes the movie!
I like to see Peter Weir take on stuff like this and live up to his potential. He's one of the most overlooked directors out there and he should do more high-profile films like this. Excellent film with one of Russell Crowe's best performances.
Upon viewing the first thirty minutes of this, you realize early that this is where Gene Roddenberry got his inspiration for Star Trek. The film is simply gripping. The characters speak in the King's English and if that weren't tough enough they also speak in the naval language of the day.............meaning that you will understand little of what they are talking about. If you can accept that most of it are people yelling commands at each other about the boat, you can get by it. You will enjoy this film.
Firstly, this is an entertaining adventure story in the truest sense - it's a self-contained, unapologetic 2 hours of storms, cannon, male cameradery (I think 3 women get screen time, totalling maybe 30 seconds, and one of them is in a picture), life-and-death decisions, sword fights and string duets. I reckon it would work really well as a TV series - it has that kind of old-fashioned "what's going to happen next" momentum which would carry you through season after season, without having to resort to ridiculous character contortions and plot handbrake-turns ("24" style!). The photography is also really effective - the claustrophobic environment, the desperate clambering around the ship's rigging and deck, the wide vistas of the Galapagos Islands, the sky and the seas serve to emphasise how far from home they are and how poor the conditions have become.
Secondly... this film has truly SUPERB sound. It is honestly stunning with a decent 5.1 system - you are surrounded and enveloped by the often subtle sound of crashing waves, creaking timber, booming cannon... it's a triumphant symphony of sounds which is as much a character in the film as any of the leads. The below-deck scenes actually make you feel a bit queasy as the water laps against the hull and the camera lurches around...
Extremely impressive. Great leading performance from Crowe. The only thing that lets this film down slightly is a section in the middle that loses focus on the main plot. Otherwise its great.

I heard they might have been making a sequel to this film, called Post Captain. Although i haven't heard anything since.
I was hesitant to see this film at first. After seeing Pirates of the Caribbean I did not think I could see another old English styled film for I was getting sea sick! BUT I thought I’d see it anyway. So, I took my Dramamine® and sat through it. IT WAS WORTH IT. The story was intoxicating! The film makers should be proud. Over all, a job well done!!!!
