McLintock!

John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Patrick Wayne

John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara were born to star in "The Taming of the Shrew," and this is the closest they ever got. Wayne plays a cattle baron whose estranged wife (O'Hara) wants a divorce. The film ...( read more  read more... )is basically one long, funny brawl between them, ending with a mud pit melee and Wayne publicly spanking O'Hara, which doesn't look quite so politically correct anymore. This is no great shakes--director Andrew V. McLaglen is simply hosting a party here--but it's worth a few chuckles and the stars' broad performances. --Tom Keogh

amusing and funny western comedy with a bit of spanking in if you're into that sorta thing! the duke shows his softer side and maureen o'hara plays a bitter but laughable character. she even looks good for an older woman. entertaining afternoon tv

Despite the Duke and O'Hara starring in McLintock, I did not enjoy the movie that much. I am nota fan of Slapstick and farce Westerns. I do enjoy subtly interwoven lighthearted moments a la John Ford, but leave me be when it comes to ten minutes of people brawling in the mud. It ...( read more)might work for Keaton, Laurel, Chaplin, but I am lookimg for big spurs in a Wayne western. There is not much of a story, just the Duke flexing his muscles against the lot. A vehicle fot star. O Hara is a delight, as usual, and her sparring with Wayne reminds of milestone film The Quiet Man. The rest of the cast is mediocre, mostly typecast. Average, if not below average for those not particular about Wayne and/or O' Hara.

This movie makes me laugh more each time I see it' While not politically correct by today's standards (who cares?) this movie is high on comedy and short on plot. That's okay though, because it's a lot of fun!

John's got a lot of control in this movie. He puts up with a lot of crap from O'Hara, but keeps his cool until... All in all the movie was a family story and never really broke into any Waynesque action (minus the mud hill) which was kinda fun.
