Plot: Deliverance goes to high school in this grim, stripped-down fable of a prank gone bad. Friends decide to teach a lesson to a teenage bully by inviting him on a canoeing trip where they will hum...( read more read more... )iliate him once and for all. The prank turns seriously sour, and the kids must deal with the consequences. Writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes takes a somber look at these lives, although his low-key approach makes the central tragedy seem melodramatic when it happens. The film isn't quite new enough to be truly revelatory, but Estes neatly avoids a River's Edge rehash by allowing his characters more than dead-eyed anomie. The actors hit their notes with precision, especially Rory Culkin (another of the Culkin family, with Macaulay and Kieran), Ryan Kelley, and Scott Mechlowicz. This is the kind of movie that may be slightly familiar to older audiences, but could easily be a home-video cult item with younger viewers. --Robert Horton

Powerful and heart-wrenching, Mean Creek utilizes an exceptional cast that questions just who we really are on the inside when the facade fades and the regrets of revenge.

We all like to believe we would do our best in a horrific situation; choose the right path immediately, and do the honourable thing. But would we? What if other emotions, stronger feelings of shame and fear begin to surface and cloud our judgement, so while we believe we are taking the sensible and logical path, it is merely the selfish one. Cowardice is taught as a dishonourable trait, but can it be helped in a game of survival of the fittest?

'Mean Creek' is an intense and disturbing film from first time writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes. The film opens as young Sam is beaten by school 'retard' and bully George, who is significantly larger than his victim. Sam's older brother and his friends decide to teach the kid a lesson on a 'birthday' boating trip, but as George begins to open to the idea of friendship the plan is called off by all but one, Marty. He likes to follow through with his plans.

The premise is simple, even cliché, but 'Mean Creek' avoids all the pitfalls of lesser pictures attempting to convey the breakdown of a group of close friends. For one, all the characters are elaborate, realistic and have well-rounded personalities. Culkin plays Sam with a quiet sensitivity, and Carly Schroeder is impressive as the girl caught up in a playground prank. As George Josh Peck also manages to blur the line between the bully and the kid who just wants to be accepted. Marty, played terrifically by Scott Mechlowicz, clearly has his own problems at home; the pain of being hurt by those you love is rarely solved without venting anger on a third party.

The eloquent music and patient cinematography bring the most out of this picture; all the suppressed emotions are forced to the forefront of the most tense and explosive scenes, and Estes finds unexpected poignancy and depth in the majority of his characters rather than follow the conventional 'cover-up exposure' finale.

'Mean Creek' is a rare find in its simplistic ability to make you question your moral choices, and judgement. It highlights the painful effects of vengeance on the bully and the characters themselves, and takes its time in letting the emotions unravel, and the logic rise to the surface. All actions have consequences, and the characters in 'Mean Creek' learn this in the most painful, unnecessary way.

A compelling film with terrific acting from all involved. The main chunk of the film is full of tension and angst though this is soon lost with an unsatisfying finale that fails to wrap up all the loose ends. This is a shame as if the final act followed the same pattern of the rest of the film then this would've been fantastic. Still, this deserves all the accolades and award nominations that have been thrust upon it.

I saw this movie time ago but I remember the movie as it was yesterday...
It has a lot to offer but ended up been a miserable independient film...
the cast do all of they can do to make this movie survival but it's wasn't enough because the story never went out of the original movieline.
The music is out of place and it made me yawn a few time (and i watch in the morning).

Okey as I tiped before there some rescue stuff in the movie, Rory Culkin's performance...the guy how plans a revange against a mean bully.
    Some incredible dialogues...
    but I didn't like it!

"Mean Creek is an example of why people should support independent filmmaking, especially in America. Too often is it all about the big bucks being made and little thought is put into the creative process. Although there are flaws in this film I can forgive them because the filmmakers have given us something other than what we're used to."

This movie reminded me of Bully. Both are good in their own right. The kids all did a very good job in protraying either their guilt or indifference. Enjoyed it very much.

When Sam Merrick (Rory Culkin) is beaten up by local bully George Tooney (Josh Peck), Sam's older brother Rocky (Trevor Morgan) and his friends Clyde (Ryan Kelley) and Marty (Scott Mechlowicz) plan to pretend it's Sam's birthday to "invite" George on a boat trip in which they would dare him to strip naked, jump in the lake, and run home naked. But when Sam, his girlfriend Millie (Carly Schroeder), Rocky, and Clyde see George as not much of a bad guy, they want to call off the plan, but Marty refuses. This is an intelligent, engaging movie buoyed by some of the best acting by young actors this year. Writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes, who won a 1998 Nicholl Fellowship in Screen writing for his script, takes the basic premise of revenge against a school bully and turns it into a moving and gripping film. Culkin again is convincing as a skittish young boy being picked on by the school bully, but the two startlingly brilliant performances are by Josh Peck as the bully George, and Carly Schroeder as Millie, the young girl unexpectedly dragged into the plot. Peck makes George captivating when he could just as easily made him a typical, one-note bully. Peck gives George substance and turns on the charm so well that we understand the others' reluctance to go through with exacting his comeuppance. George becomes likable, someone who seems to resort to bullying to hide inadequacies of his own. Peck draws us into his character; we feel sympathy for someone who is supposed to be unsympathetic. 'Mean Creek' is a fairly simple story told with a series of complex layers. Humiliation, vengeance, a waking nightmare, no heroes or villains...the film is filled with themes. In the final thirty minutes, the characters are forced to deal with the consequences of their actions.

this film is pure bliss, i loved absolutly every minute of it. The camera used to film it made the film even better you got the raw feeling of the story and it made it feel that much more real. You don't know whether to feel bad or not for the 'victim' did he have it coming or not. All the performances are great, they all portray very well the sense of hate and fright and torture they all felt throughout the film.

this movie really has alot of really low points, the "bully" in this movie is alot like my brother so the teasing and plotting made my stomach really tense up. Overall a pretty good movie.

What happens when reality strikes you in the face? Mean Creek is purely about vengeance, tragedy and regret. It's a movie that makes you realize that anything can happen in life, and that you can never be prepared for the events that life bring.

The movie was great reality biting drama which gives you insight to the fragileness of life. The fact that the cast basically is set with unknown actors makes the movie feel more real than an ordinary Hollywood slobber knocker drama.

Very good attempt. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in exploring the ideas of bullying and underage criminality. Realistic and to-the-point, it's an excellent piece which gives answers to the matters and the stories that the media never seem to be able to grasp.
