I feel lazy for not reading the book first. I really did enjoy this film but I do wish it had been a Japanese production. It was a bit too westernised for my liking. That said, the cinematography and the acting are fantastic!

by the time it got interesting i was no longer interested. there was one mesmerising scene in which the protagonist dances on a stage very dramatically. towards the end i saw a fire... some screaming... and some war planes... but by then it was all too late for me to care!

The experience of watching this film is mesmerizing. Not only is it beautiful, but the acting is terrific all around. I didn't want it to end. Can't wait to see it again to soak in the atmosphere and story more deeply. The use of color alone is worth studying closely. " She paints her face to hide her face. Her eyes are deep water. It is not for Geisha to want. It is not for geisha to feel. Geisha is an artist of the floating world. She dances, she sings. She entertains you, whatever you want. The rest is shadows, the rest is secret.""A story like mine should never be told..." but it was a pleasure to hear it!!

Well I've never read the book, which I've heard is better (which is almost always the case). Interestingly enough, this is taking place in Japan and many of the actresses are Chinese which is very obvious. However, it was a good movie. Had some nice shots.

This gives hope to the young girls growing up in this culture, but apparently not all the actors were Japanese, good storyline, but moves fast
