Agent J?s typical day at the office is monitoring alien presence on Earth and keeping the world from getting destroyed. One what seems to be a normal day, Agent J learns an old enemy of the Men In Black has landed illegally in New York City and plans on destroying her arch nemesi...( read more)s and the Earth. Agent J calls upon retired agent K to help him stop their age old enemy. This time their enemy is prepared and maybe too strong for the Men In Black to handle. Can The Men in Black be called upon one last time to save the Earth? Or is Earth?s destruction intimate and their enemy will finally have their revenge extracted?
Men In Black II has a lot of pressure to live up to. The success of the previous film in any franchise in most cases crushes the hope of many sequels. Men in Black II may not be the greatest film, but the film still does the comic book justice. This time the roles of Smith and Jones are a tad reversed as Jones seems to be the rookie trying to get in the swing of things. As in most cases the original is still a better film, but that is not saying one cannot have fun with this film. Men In Black II is a fun B-rated science fiction film, Men in Black II could have been strong in a few minor areas but their really no difference in feel in comparison to the first one. Men in Black II receives three and half shades out of five for being a fun action packed sci-fi adventure.

Men in Black agent J has been paired with a variety of other agents ever since K?s departure, all with unsatisfactory results. J investigates after an alien disguised as a human running a pizza parlour is killed. There J is attracted to witness Laura Vasquez and breaks protocol a...( read more)nd doesn't neuralyze her. J finds that behind the murder is the intergalactic tyrant Serleena who has arrived on Earth in search of the all-powerful Light of Zarthar. However the only person that knows where the Light is is K and so J goes to where K is now working in a post-office in Massachusetts with all memory of his time in the Men in Black having been neuralyzed. As Serleena invades Men in Black headquarters, J tries to bring K's memory back. Succeeding in doing so, K then realizes that he has blanked the memory of the Light's location from himself. And so they set out to follow a trail of clues that K has left for himself, all before the Light blows up and destroys the Earth within 12 hours. Men in Black II other a series of visual sight gags and ones that so frequently rupture the envelope of credibility that the characters could all but be leaving silhouettes behind as they go flying through walls. Almost everything that happens in the film has been designed as a giant cartoonish jack-in-the-box effect Sonnenfeld does almost nothing else except introduce things and then have an alien or some gadgets shown to be hiding beneath. Lara Flynn is a vampish menace of no depth. Smith and Jones, who are just as good as you might expect - though they never really take these characters anywhere different. Men in Black 2 will no doubt please the millions who loved the first one, while those who disliked the original should certainly stay away.

This sequel to the execlent first men in black brings a lot of the same stuff but this time it is on a larger scale. I dont mind this as the pacing is good and thescript is funny. There is a good chemestry to these films and it?s a shame that there is no a thrid one. But as this ...( read more)movie stands it is a fun, funny film.

Nick Schager, Matinee Magazine

Packed to the gills with stale gags and humdrum computer-enhanced action sequences. full review

Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

Men in Black II, with its agreeably slipshod feel, is even slighter than the 1997 original, but as summer blockbusters go, it's shameless fun. full review

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

In every way an improvement over the original Men in Black. full review

Instead of the fresh comic concept of the 1996 blockbuster, we have a calculated piece of product: a lightweight, occasionally laboured copycat skewed to a younger children's demographic to move the a... full review

Within the trivial, ingratiating scope of its ambition, though, the sequel is pleasant enough. This is a picture that demands nothing of its audience, and not much more from its stars. full review

As summer escapism goes, you could do worse. full review
