Metropolis Reviews and Ratings

One of the landmark films in cinema. As a movie however, it's just not that good. A simple story moralizing on the need for unions, and that's about all. But as a FILM, it's one of the crowning cinematic achievements ever made. Huge sets, innovative camera work and 80 tear old sp...( read more)ecial effects that are still stunning today make it one of the absolute great ones.

This silent film was made in 1927 and when I watch it today it still amazes me with it's special effects. Remembering that there were no computers back then, Fritz Lang did an excellent job.

The moral of the story is also valid for today. In a future where the rich live on t...( read more)op and live life off of the workers who are below them. They never mix or mingle.

The robot in this movie is an icon that everyone recognizes around the world.

This is a must see for everyone. I highly recommend it.

Yes, it's still relevant in this day and age. It's interesting to compare a classically good silent movie with our modern day equivalents.

If you are a TRUE fan of Sci-Fi and haven't seen Metropolis yet then you should be absolutely ashamed of yourself. The soundtrack is stunning of course (its Queen!), the visuals are ahead of its time and antique

I need to see more of Lang's work, but this is incredibly expansive and daring of an undertaking. But the message isn't so subtle. Still quite good for a silent film.

ugh. a socialistic crappy attempt at a movie.

considering the influence, this film had the history of cinema, i think this is really good. Thought the gal who played Maria and the robot was great.

My favorite silent film by far. I wish my idiot 90 year old film teacher didn't fast forward thru so much of it. I must watch this again...a truly beautiful movie.

Interesting stuff. The actress that plays Maria, Brigitte Helm, is fantastic. She goes from sincere and innocent to a bad girl in the space of one movie.
  • March 29, 2008
Absolutely amazing. Good story, excellently done. The actress who plays Maria was great, particularly as the robot Maria - really manic.

    You must see this.

Who knew that silent films could be so much fun? First, I have to say that I was absolutely stunned by the quality of special effects in this film. It's the 1920s for crying out loud! So, kudos for that. Second, the themes that drive the plot are very rich and ahead of their ...( read more)time. Admittedly, I had to leave the museum before the film ended but, even without seeing the ending, I can confidentally say that I love this film!

I have no words to define the brilliancy of Fritz Lang's Metropolis. Awesome? Masterpiece? Fantastic? Amazing? Each one of them are correct!

cest bien faite en salle pour un film de 1927! pis lhistoire était cool quand meme!
  • March 2, 2008
A legendary black n white movie, a milestone of sci-fi and German expressionism
  • March 2, 2008
One of my favorite silent films. The fundamental concept of logic vs. emotion or mind vs. heart is the center of this film.
  • February 26, 2008
Quite exertive, but worthwhile. Fabulous "stage design" and effects, wonderful cast, interesting poins of view as to the story...
  • February 25, 2008
This movie offers an obvious allegory of the whole human psychic activity, in my opinion. Some teacher wasn't even close to be able to understand my theory about it...and gave me a crappy mark (Or how mediocrity is encouraged by the educational system).

A surprisingly well made film for its era. Its no wonder why it has influence so many sci-fi films for decades afterwards.
  • January 30, 2008
THE classic of all sci fi.. nuff said
  • January 27, 2008

  • January 9, 2008
It is true; every modern sci-fi film, no matter how high-tech, owes a huge debt to Lang's expressionistic masterpiece. While a bit sentimental for today's audiences, this film must be seen for its ground-breaking visuals alone. However, do NOT bother with the version scored by Mo...( read more)roder; it sucks. I was shocked to find myself riveted to this movie. This is without a doubt the best sci-fi movie I've ever seen! Let me explain my position. We have all seen modern sci-fi movies, and argued over which is the best ever made, but those film makers have high speed film and compute...( read more)rs. Imagine trying to make a movie today with only the tools available to Fritz Lang in 1925, and even if you used a modern camcorder it would be nigh impossible! This is a must see for all persons interested in the history of film, as well as just good fun for everyone. The social metaphores as well as the religious and philosophical double meanings are a sight to behold.

Another One Of Those Movie You Have To Keep In Mind That It Is Made For Entertainment,Not If It's Possible.
  • December 24, 2007
A must see silent film. It is sad that history had to go the way it did. The Germans made some of the best films in the world. If the nazis didn't take power who knows what great films might have come.
  • December 19, 2007
A brilliant piece of movie history. Brilliant effects and Cinematography
  • December 17, 2007
The tragedy with this German made film is that when they imported it into the united states, the American movie industry chopped the thing to pieces. The story line became non-existent, disjointed. I urge people who want to see the full effect of the 1927 German version seek ou...( read more)t the restoration that was done in the 1970 or 80's (I forget). The producer managed to find and restore much of the movie, and add a soundtrack that is astounding.

Un des mes films muets préférés. Révolutionnaire sur bien des plans et inspiration évidente pour une multitude de films qui suivront.

A film classic; need to see for background in later film & modern culture. Not sure how I've missed it all this time.
