Metropolis Reviews and Ratings

One of my favorite silent films. The fundamental concept of logic vs. emotion or mind vs. heart is the center of this film.

Quite exertive, but worthwhile. Fabulous "stage design" and effects, wonderful cast, interesting poins of view as to the story...

This movie offers an obvious allegory of the whole human psychic activity, in my opinion. Some teacher wasn't even close to be able to understand my theory about it...and gave me a crappy mark (Or how mediocrity is encouraged by the educational system).

A surprisingly well made film for its era. Its no wonder why it has influence so many sci-fi films for decades afterwards.

It is true; every modern sci-fi film, no matter how high-tech, owes a huge debt to Lang's expressionistic masterpiece. While a bit sentimental for today's audiences, this film must be seen for its ground-breaking visuals alone. However, do NOT bother with the version scored by Mo...( read more)roder; it sucks. Look for the most recent restored version. It's truly worth it.

I was shocked to find myself riveted to this movie. This is without a doubt the best sci-fi movie I've ever seen! Let me explain my position. We have all seen modern sci-fi movies, and argued over which is the best ever made, but those film makers have high speed film and compute...( read more)rs. Imagine trying to make a movie today with only the tools available to Fritz Lang in 1925, and even if you used a modern camcorder it would be nigh impossible! This is a must see for all persons interested in the history of film, as well as just good fun for everyone. The social metaphores as well as the religious and philosophical double meanings are a sight to behold.

Another One Of Those Movie You Have To Keep In Mind That It Is Made For Entertainment,Not If It's Possible.
  • December 24, 2007
A must see silent film. It is sad that history had to go the way it did. The Germans made some of the best films in the world. If the nazis didn't take power who knows what great films might have come.

A brilliant piece of movie history. Brilliant effects and Cinematography
  • December 17, 2007
The tragedy with this German made film is that when they imported it into the united states, the American movie industry chopped the thing to pieces. The story line became non-existent, disjointed. I urge people who want to see the full effect of the 1927 German version seek ou...( read more)t the restoration that was done in the 1970 or 80's (I forget). The producer managed to find and restore much of the movie, and add a soundtrack that is astounding.

story is really paced but other than that its magic
  • December 10, 2007
Un des mes films muets préférés. Révolutionnaire sur bien des plans et inspiration évidente pour une multitude de films qui suivront.
  • December 9, 2007
A film classic; need to see for background in later film & modern culture. Not sure how I've missed it all this time.
  • December 8, 2007
Lang is a master. And Metropolis is just one of his greatest masterpieces.
For me one of the best movies i watched.
  • December 5, 2007
Incredible both in its effects and theme... this movie was so far ahead of its time in 1927, and its relevance today is uncanny. See it!
  • December 2, 2007
an amazing achievement in art deco style whose influence on modern sci-fi cannot be overstated. the restored version is stunning to watch.

Stunning sci-fi flick, but in case anyone was wondering about the message of the story, this was Hitler's favorite movie.

Fritz Lang and German expressionism do it again, this time creating some of the most iconic images in sci-fi history. Best bit: The birth of the robot Maria, the forebear of all modern androids.
  • November 22, 2007
L'expressionisme allemand. jeux d' ombres et lumières, formes géométrique, Fritz Lang annonce les camps de concentrations et l'arrivée des syndicats.
  • November 21, 2007
Another great example of silent cinema and German Expressionism....this movie is SO ahead of its time it's not even funny.
  • November 19, 2007
Innovative, stimulating, and highly intrinsic, Fritz Lang's Metropolis is one of the most visually inspired creations to enter cinema and proves to have acted as a benefactor in cinema's progression. While it's social implications are steadily becoming more identifiable through i...( read more)t's generalised ideals, it nevertheless manages to stimulate us through it's tight knit framework of the city life in an evolving community.

  • November 11, 2007
NI que hablar una de las mejores peliculas de la historia

Awesome. the birth of science fiction movies.
  • November 9, 2007
If you have not seen this, you are not a sci-fi fan. it is the holy grail.
  • November 4, 2007
I'm not a fan of silent movies in general, but this ones got something. Personally, i like to turn down the crappy soundtrack, and watch it along with some skinny puppy...
  • November 4, 2007
A visually stunning film whose influence can be found in countless Science Fiction films that followed. Despite being cut, restored and generally mishandled over its 80 year history, the presentation in the R2 Eureka disc is simply sublime. The crisp picture quality and restored ...( read more)musical score allow the viewer to revel in the film's superb production values. Supporting this visual element is an engaging plot and strong performances from the main characters and supporting cast.

Whilst the appeal of a two hour silent film may not be to everyone's taste, any self-respecting fan of cinema should at least rent this truly visionary piece of art.

In my opinion one of the best movies ever made. The story's original and really makes one think about the world and society. I love all the huge and dark sceneries because of the strong depressing atmosphere they create, it suits the movie so well. And the actors are unbelievable...( read more), they play like in a theatre, which is often considered a negative, but it makes the movie more emotional. I will never forget the impression Metropolis made on me and I'm gonna watch it again and again because it never was and never will be beaten by any other movie. We may have better techniques, more tricks and computers, but we will never create an atmosphere like this again.

Freder: It was their hands that built this city of ours, Father. But where do the hands belong in your scheme?
Joh Frederson: In their proper place, the depths.

A hugely influential German, sci fi, silent film from 1927.

Director Fritz Lang's original version has been lost acc...( read more)ording to the helpful restored cuts opening titles. This film takes the remaining negatives or re-edited release prints, and combines that with some helpful cards containing summaries of what is missed. The movie literally has missing reels.

Despite some of the choppiness, this movie is crazy good. It is about a society where a huge city is lived in by the minds that have designed it, and run by workers below it, who work in 10 hour shifts.

A young man, Freder, chooses to go down in the depths after meeting a woman who is trying to prevent the workers from revolting, and decides to work down there himself.

Meanwhile, Freder's father, Joh Fredersen, is the man in charge of the entire city, and meets with a mad scientist (would there be any other kind) about a robot that has been built. These two want to use the robot for their own evil plans involving the cities workers.

This all leads to what can best be described as an action packed finale involving good vs evil and lower vs higher class.

While the story is intriguing itself, it is the amazing set design and ideas presented in the film that make it worthwhile. I can literally name hundreds of movies that have been influenced by different aspects of Metropolis.

Being a silent film, the music has to work for the film, since that is the only sound to here, and it does. The score is appropriately performed in context with all the different things going on here.

This is no doubt one of the most influential films of all time, and it also helps that it is a good film as well.

Maria: There can be no understanding between the hand and the brain unless the heart acts as mediator.

Somebody needs to do a remake of this 1920's silent gem that captured the clash between industries thinkers and doers. Still resonates today... and later put to DVD with a Queen soundtrack. Cool.
