Basically he's a fixer, sorts you out in a pinch. However when he has to help a company cover up that their CEO has gone completely stark raving mad, suddenly he finds things going a little out of sorts and his life in danger.

Tony Gilroy's "Michael Clayton" is a high-powered yet subtle legal thriller in which we begin to have empathy - first for one man deemed crazy by his employer and his closest friend, and then for the friend, who must determine just how crazy his friend and colleague is.

<...( read more)br/>George Clooney plays the title character, a "fixer" for legal messes, who when we first meet him, is world-weary, beaten down by his job, and yet, still trying to commit to what he does for a living.

Colleague and friend Arthur Edens (Tom Wilkinson, in the year's first sure-fire Supporting Actor nomination deserving performance), believes that he too has been corrupted by his work, protecting an agro-chemical company for years against allegations of pollution causing deaths in small towns.

Clayton must seek out the truth at all costs, including potentially, the life of Edens, as well as his own.

Gilroy, a first time writer-director who is famous for penning the Bourne movies, keeps the film at a remarkably steady pace, drawing us in rather than assaulting us with improbable action in corporate settings.

The supporting cast, including Wilkinson (the anchor of the film), Sydney Pollack as Clayton's off-the-books employer, and Tilda Swinton as a remarkably nervous agro-chemical employee who knows more than she's letting on, is quite simply, uniformly, superb.

This is definitely one of the year's best films. Nominated for 7 Oscars, including Best Picture!

George Clooney had starred in some great movies (Three Kings, O Brother Where Art Thou, Out of Sight, Syriana, Good Night and Good Luck), but I hadn't paid him much mind until I saw this movie. The best performance, in my opinion, comes from Tom Wilkinson, who is delightfully MA...( read more)D! It was the movie that surprised me most in 2007, because I was predetermined to love a few and this wasn't on my radar at all.

Excels in every aspect of filmmaking.

This Guy Over Here picks this as one of the Best Films of the 2000s

    this movie pretty much sucked
  • November 5, 2009
C'est un bon film, un défenseur des droits qui s'oppose à trop gros que lui, c'est du déjà vu mais j'aime bien.

Saw this on the plane and it put me to sleep. I just don't buy George Clooney's acting.

Love this film. At first I thought it would be an OK film but it was beyond my expectation. Tilda Swinton perhaps deserve her Oscar but I like Tom Wilkinson here, he's good and George Clooney too.

I heard so many good things about this but fail to feel the enthusiasm about it.

The first half of the film is quite the buzz kill. Very boring and drawn out.
I understand that this part of the film is all about character development but......DAMN!
It does redeem itself towards...( read more) the end but by this time I've felt like I spent an eternity to get there.
The best part of this film is the ending. If you can endure the first half of the film that is.
I did enjoy the very ending (I won't spoil it though) where Clooney is alone with his thoughts, while boring yet not as much as the beginning, it is the plain expression on his face that is key. Peace of mind maybe?
Or just that maybe my senses had been dulled.

Still after watching this it was a decent film, just not as great as most make it out to be.

Good story, but a little a bit predictable.
  • October 12, 2009
too boring to watch... i was distracted doing some other things, probably will give better ratings once i've seen it again, when i'm NOT really doing some other things... =pPp

Boring. Rented this and fell asleep. Not kinda ... but boring.
  • October 1, 2009
A good original thriller, nicely directed by Gilroy and well acted by the cast. Clooney is on good form as usual but its Wilkinson and Swinton who really steal the show. Swinton's corporate villain is easily the best female baddie since Louise Fletcher's Nurse Mildred Ratched. He...( read more)r character is handled really well and is a good enough reason to watch the film alone!

Is there such a thing as an honest lawyer? This movie struggles with that question. Could you defend a company that sell chemicals that poison its customers? This is an interesting movie to watch. I recommend it.
  • September 27, 2009
I think I missed the point of this movie but I enjoyed it all the same. The ending was awesome.
  • September 23, 2009
Astounding piece of genius. i loved it. alot of language though.
  • September 23, 2009
A role almost too perfect for Clooney. Very good indeed!
  • September 17, 2009
A well-developed political drama with good performances throughout, a great script, good pacing and a great storyline, but becomes boring half way through.

    62/100

Found it kind of boring and started to lose interest in it but I think i got everything in the end when it picked up. George clooney is still pretty awesome just found this movie to be a little boring.
  • September 4, 2009
This was pretty awesome, a little slow
  • August 30, 2009
It's a solidly good movie. There's not a lot of flash and the thrill in this thriller is very subdued which works sometimes...but only sometimes. Really it's the performances by the major actors that make it work. I really loved Clooney's character, he was very layered and intere...( read more)sting but he doesn't have that trademark Clooney likability until the last scene.

Gledam prvih sat vremena i nista mi nije jasno, malo pogledam na netu kako se treba odvijat situacija i dodem do samog kraja filma i pomislim kako ovaj triler nisam ni trebala pogledat, a u principu jako volim trilere. Jos kao pravo moja struka lol
  • August 27, 2009
Michael Clayton took a while to get going, but once it did it was a pretty good movie. I really liked the ending.
  • August 27, 2009
A dull and disappointing Action Thriller, that simply lacked umph and struggled to grasp my concentration.
  • August 15, 2009
Well made and moody. Nice camera angles, I like stuff like that

I was lost for about seventy percent of the time. What went on exactly? So, uh, politics on film are a major turn off for me. Its ultra-realism reminds you that you're supposed to be preparing for your job instead of watching films. But I decided to break a barrier by seeing this...( read more) - the first watch in a genre is the worst and it will gradually get better I hope.
Good casting for Tom Wilkinson and George Clooney's characters. Wilkinson reminds you of the ambiguously insane guy from Network. George Clooney looking fine for his late 40s steps out of character every once in a while and doesn't convince me in those areas but mostly he acts well. Tilda Swinton gets away with her mannerisms but her accent is noticeable in her speech.
The dialogue caused me to immediately doze off though occasionally it had adult humor which I was fond of. I didn't follow the storyline entirely and I don't know which party was after which nor why until the end. The strong expressions from the cast guide the film - they more or less inform who's "good" and "bad". One brilliant sequence involving car bombs Sucks for some characters - classic ending.
  • August 8, 2009
A good film with great turns from the actors. Best Picture material? I think not. Movie paces well in the middle when very little is happening and the best scene is saved for the end - old school.
  • August 6, 2009
Very slow plot. Story didn't come completely together until the last 5 minutes. No real happy ending.
  • July 31, 2009
A remarkably strong, intellectual, and suspenseful thriller- with a conscience. I went in doubting if I would be able to buy George Clooney in such a dramatic role- and was wonderfully surprised. Overall, It's a boring movie.
The ending is quite intensify anyway.
    Fantastic acting and well-written script.
Nice score by James Newton Howard!
Worth a watch if you really like a pure, good film.

The 'Fixer's' survival instinct has forced him to take care of dirty deeds, but now the blood on his hands can't be ignored. A tremendously entertaining and pulse-pounding thriller. It's gripping, riveting, exciting, explosive, genuinely thrilling and all the way exhilerating. George Clooney has never been better, he gives a powerful and unforgettable performance. Stealing the show in every outstanding way. It stands as one of his greatest performances ever. A complex and compelling character. A great cast of talents that all show what their made of. A great example of what superb acting is all about. Tilda Swinton is teriffic. Tom Wilkonson is brilliant. Sydney Pollack gives a fine performance. It serves up on it's hard-boiled story with insenity that wont quit. A strong film fuelled by rip-roaring tension. A solid, remarkable, smart, brilliant, mature and incrediably energetic edge of your seat film. Sizzeling, dazzeling, extroadinary and totally edge of your seat. A drilling, haunting, ingenious and satisfying conclusion. It grabs you and dosent let go. I loved this film and everything it brought to the table.

Very, very good. Michael Clayton is both an extremely rich dissection of the moral dilemmas encountered in corporative dice games AND an elegant, fluidly shot drama. You can tell it's a screenwriter's movie from the top-notch (yet a bit too pointy) dialogue to the unusual attenti...( read more)on paid to its characters, which are rendered with a lot of flair by Clooney, Swinton and especially Wilkinson. Michael Clayton is most definitely not a film about guns or heart-pounding countdowns-- this is a sharp and sober examination of the increasingly morally ambiguous firms capped that is an exquisite conclusion that puts everything in its right place. This one's a keeper.

    Intellectual thriller
  • June 26, 2009
Crisp and impressive, this professional lawcase issue reveals the workings of in- house fixers, who worship the motto of adjustment of truth.
Gives a realistic and disheartening depiction of the exploitation of public faith for profit making motives by firms.
  • June 23, 2009
Very good, kept me watching it all the way through, even though the interactions between characters are complex.

"You're so fucked. Here let me get a picture while I'm at it."

Academy Award nominations for directing, acting, writing, movie. So basically one of "The Movies" of the year 2007. Well, Oscars don't make films great, they're just awards that give some publicity but I'll admit the...( read more) hype worked on me. I wanted to see this, watched it and got a bit disappointed.

There's a lot of talent behind the film. Tony Gilroy, in his directorial debut, wrote the 'Bourne' films, the producers of the film, Soderbergh, Minghella etc, are well known and know how to make successful movies and the actors are so called A-list actors. But like the "Dawg" from American Idol would say; "Didn't work for me."

The film is another corporate law firm thriller that are bound to get positive reviews from critics. Well, I ain't no real critic, just a movie buff and, man, did I get bored and depressed during the film. Like Joker said from the 'Dark Knight'; "Why so serious?". Not a single smile, everyone's looking like they got "fucked in the ass by a roll of quarters" and the cinematography lenses varied from grey to supergrey. And that's a shame because the script seemed somewhat interesting. But I had difficulties to get my focus on.

The acting was good and I'm pleased that one of my favourite actresses got credit for her performance but I'm pretty sure that I will not give this film another chance. It might deserve it, I might like it the next time but then again why bother when there's hundreds of films that give me pure entertainment rather than depressive visuals and thoughts.
  • June 20, 2009
A bit overrated, surely, but this movie still offers a surprisingly interesting look at what lengths people will go to to get things done.
