This is one of Guilermo Del toro's first outings in hollywood. Mimic told the story of a woman scientist that discovers overgrown cockroaches swarming the sewers of new york disguised as humans.
Doug Jones brought to life some of the cockroaches in this film. With this as one of his starting talents it really showed what he was capable of doing. The film had its fair share of visual effects, costumes and gore.
I thought Guilermo Del Toro did a fine decent job as his first outing in hollywood. This wasn't his best work but it most certainly was a decent film for one of his first films
Typical monster movie where bugs adapt out of control and prey upon humans. Please.
Well, technically they can't be bugs, as after bugs get past a certain size/weight, their method of oxygen intake fails unless there's considerably more of it in the air. Kind of fun to watch, nonetheless.
This actually isn't a bad flick. Its cliched, obviously, and the story is just confusing. Why did the bugs grow so big? Whatever. Mira Sorvino is a good actress, just fell off the side off the earth after winning her academy award. Del Toro did direct it, and it shows as the directing is above average in this B-horror movie. I found it entertaining nonetheless.
A disease carried by common cockroaches is killing Manhattan children. In an effort to stop the epidemic an entomologist, Susan Tyler, creates a mutant breed of insect that secretes a fluid to kill the roaches. This mutant breed was engineered to die after one generation, but three years later Susan finds out that the species has survived and evolved into a large, gruesome monster that can mimic human form.
Look everyone has a bad movie even if Guillermo del Toro was behind Cronos, The Devil's Backbone, Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth. Give the guy a break he knows how cheesy and lame of the bugs are and how bad the writing and the acting is. Let's just leave it alone and forget about it like we all should.
A series of deaths and disappearances seem to lead back to the release of a genetically engineered cockroaches three years earlier. The early part of this film seems very much like the usual run of the mill horror film; disappearances in dark corridors, bumps in the night and failing flashlights with the inevitable cop/scientist combo in pursuit. Things change however as the action shifts underground, and Guillermo Del Toro's keen sense of style and atmosphere comes to the fore. It takes a lot of cues from the Alien films, pilfering many ideas from Aliens, and featuring Charles S. Dutton in a very similar role to that in Alien 3. The shocks are well engineered, the monster effects pretty well done and Del Toro is very skilled at keeping the audience on the edge of their seat. As to be expected when a foreign director takes the helm in the early days of his Hollywood career, the cast is rather lacklustre, but they all acquit themselves adequately. It's also very derivative but if you can accept the rather ridiculous premise, one of the better creature features of recent years.
One of my all time favourites! Lately I have even found someone that made "homage" to it in their art! http://www.gallery-worldwide.com/cmItem.jsp?id=16742
Guillermo del Toro has really improved his abilities to make decent movies. Hard to believe that the director of blade 2, the devils backbone and mimic made hellboy and pans labyrinth.
Not very scary or that original, but its pretty freakin' cool to watch. The plot is a little science heavy at the beginning, but don't let that discourage you from this movie. The last fifteen minutes are worth the wait through the boring stuff as it becomes a very intense thrill ride. Of course the greatest part of the movie is the bugs, which look more like giant grasshoppers rather then cockroaches.
I don't like bugs, and so this movie was extra creepy for me. I also think Miro Sorvino is a really good actress. Other than that, it's an average 90s "horror" movie.
true true.. beauty & the bug.. but no love affair between them though.. huak huak! *O* science is not a gd thing to play ard w..especially in the poisonous owrld our here.. things simply get mutated juz so easily..
A decent movie about a giant bug that can take a human shape, Mimic is not the greatest film of its kind, but it's not bad either. If nothing else, it's certainly an interesting take on the "killer creature" idea.
I like these movies, mutant creature born out of human curiosity that's soon discarded because it's not what I wanted, nice special fx, direction of movie keeps audience in supsense
A giant bug film, but without any bug riding. Shame. It's an interesting and original idea having bugs impersonate human beings. Not as creepy as it could have been.
I'm not a big fan of giant bug films but for some reason hwen I watched this is absolutely loved it. I liked it so much I watched it again the next day. I recommend this film.
One of the first movies I remember seeing that killed childten withouth regret. A monster that doesn't discriminate. Not bad. Too bad the film didn't continue this route and let all the morons live.
