Minority Report is a 2002 science fiction film directed by Steven Spielberg and loosely based on the short story "The Minority Report" by Philip K. Dick. Minority Report mixes the features of a 1930s film noir with a classic modernist science fiction and the more recent wonderland tradition of "Blade Runner" and "The Matrix." If there's nothing especially original about the combination, it's brilliantly executed as pure cinema, bo...( read more)th breathtaking and disturbing.

If you strip down all the special effects and futuristic mumbo-jumbo all this movie turned out to be was an average whodunit. This will be the only time you will see Tommy Boy and Colin Ferrel in the same movie because Tommy Boy hates it when he stars with actors who are better l...( read more)ooking than him (and better actors than him for that matter). The ending was flat. A typical Spielberg ending.

Really great and well done. Suspensive, tense and pumping. No plot holes or discontinuities, which is rare for movies like this.

The ending went for too long. Still OK, though.
  • September 24, 2009
Very eye opening look into the future!
  • September 20, 2009
Spielberg and Cruise's first collaboration doesn't disappoint. I loved the story and 'realistic' special effects. Samanatha Mortan and Colin Farrell provided solid support too.

A really interesting film and I put alot of thought into reviewing it afterwards
  • September 20, 2009
originally not interested in this flix, after seeing it however, I strongly recommend it. The story line well conceived, the actors do a fine job, and of course speilburg ties it all together into one excellent film.

  • September 8, 2009
Spielberg and Cruise do dark science fiction, not unlike their later War of the Worlds collaboration. Nothing special here, but the underlying Philip K. Dick story has much more interesting ideas than WotW.

Good movie, funny that Peter Stormare and his assistant is talking swedish to eachother ...
  • September 4, 2009
This movie defines suspense. Somewhat like momento, it keeps you guessing until the very end. Tom Cruise plays a cop in the future. He stops crimes before they happen. • August 29, 2009
Despite my thoughts going into this movie and the fact that it started off kind of slow, this actually turned out to be a pretty cool action/thriller.

Fun film to watch. A little bit mind twisting... and a very cool finale. Good film to see.

If someone could predict all the future crimes, would it be better? If the innocent people in dispare have a thought of murder, but choose not to do it. Should they be arrested and locked just because what might happen? Or should we do so in order to prevent things such as these ...( read more)and to live free without fear?
Probably we should, but on other hand anyone could be arrested if gets angry enough and imagine killing someone who did them wrong, like we all did, but allow his common sence to calm him down.

This is how things work in 2054. where crime is virtually eliminated from Washington D.C. thanks to an elite law enforcing squad "Precrime".
They use three genetically altered humans with special powers to see he future and predict crimes beforehand, the Pre-Cogs. John Anderton heads Precrime believes that the system is flawless, until Pre-Cogs predict that he will commit a murder in the next 36 hours. Now on the run from the cops of Precrime, Anderton has to prove his innocence and discover if his murder was one of the rare cases in which one Precog sees things differently from the other two, called a Minority Report.

The movie is very good. I like it. Tom Cruse did amazing job as John Anderton, Colin Farrell was hot as always and play his role of Danny Witwer nicely. Samantha Morton as Agatha was brilliant and I always love to see Peter Stormare, who greatly portrayed crazy, psycho Dr. Solomon Eddie in a small, but noticeable role.

Brilliant work of Steven Spielberg. I enjoyed watching it again.

    ...........................................................................................................................
John Anderton: Mr. Marks, by mandate of the District of Columbia Precrime Division, I'm placing you under arrest for the future murder of Sarah Marks and Donald Dubin that was to take place today, April 22 at 0800 hours and four minutes.
    ...........................................................................................................................
Dr. Solomon: For true enlightenment there is nothing like... well, let's just say taking a shower while this large fellow with an attitude you couldn't knock down with a hammer, that keeps whispering in your ear: Oh nancy, Oh nancy. Now that was a lot of fun, thank you so very much John for putting me in there, thank you so very much for giving me an opportunity to get to know myself much better.
    ...........................................................................................................................
    Officer Fletcher: John, don't run.
John Anderton: You don't have to chase me.
Officer Fletcher: You don't have to run.
    John Anderton: Everybody runs, Fletch.
    ...........................................................................................................................
Wally the Caretaker: You're not allowed in here - who are you? Do I know you?
    John Anderton: [in disguise]
    [grabs Wally by the collar]
John Anderton: Listen, Wally - I like you. So, I don't wanna have to kick you or hit you, but only if you promise to help me.
Wally the Caretaker: ...Oh, hi, John.

(2002 Director: Steven Spielberg) Tom Cruise outdid himself in this movie and The War of the Worlds!!! MUST SEE!! Shhh! Don't give away the ending!! This is an incredible suspense film...and a rare peak into the human psyche...

Read on at risk of spoiling the movie (if you h...( read more)ave NOT seen it!) Max vonSydow seems to be in a lot of my very most favorite movies. He seems to have an eye for those films which take us right up the edge & force us to face our mortality head on! BRAVO!

This film is stunning and on my "Must See" list because:
    a) Incredible acting
    b) Futuristic look at our pious & better than thou attitude biting us in the butt!
    c) Yet another reminder that human nature will remain human nature EVEN
in the future AS it is in the present and was in the past!
    d) somehow we think we can outthink ourselves??!#@

This film takes us into some awesome mental/psyche levels of thought as do the following films which I consider also before their time:

    Movie Recommendation Issue(s) Dealt With

    Equillibrium ( A society medicated?? )
Planet of the Apes (the original) (Time Travel/Evolution)
A Sound of Thunder (short story by (Time Travel--Will we outdo ourselves thru our scientific endeavors??)
Ray Bradbury turned into a movie)
The Butterfly Effect (Delves into the mind's workings)
    The 6th Day
The Matrix (How far is too far? Trust?)
    Blindness (Human Nature/Disaster-biological/Preparedness)
    The Island (Future Science-Cloning, Trust?)
    Wall-E (Ecology/Health)
    Lost in Space (Ecology)
    Dune (Intergalactic war over ?)

Perhaps it is not clear what each of these movies + Minority Report have in common? They have a theme of either futuristic or no foresight or reaping the results of our gluttony + failure to plan ahead!! FEEL FREE TO ADD YOUR OWN FAVORITES TO THIS LIST I'M STARTING!!

The Future Can Be Seen. Murder Can be Prevented. The Guilty Punished Before the Crime is Committed. The System is Perfect. It's Never Wrong. Until It Comes After You.

This intellectual thriller dazzles the mind with its gripping story, impressive vis...( read more)ual style, and dramatic action scenes.

In 2054 Washington D.C., homicide no longer exists thanks to the Precrime Initiative, a police department that uses three psychics known as 'Precogs' to see murders taking place in the future. Precrime is always two steps ahead of these offenses and in the six years of the departments existence, no homicide in the nation's capital has ever happened. Upon arriving at the scene of these soon to be crimes, the perpetrator is arrested and sentenced to a cold and uncaring prison for years. The head of the Precrime police force is Chief John Anderton, a man who gets the job done but is secretly addicted to drugs and emotionally torn over the collapse of his marriage and the mysterious disappearance of his son which took place several months before the creation of Precrime. John Anderton is a confident man and believes the Precrime system is perfect and incorruptible. His belief in that system changes the moment he witnesses a Precogs vision of a crime that involves himself as the murderer. John Anderton is now on the run and in 36 hours he will meet a man he has never met and murder him if he chooses to do so. Anderton finds a woman named Dr. Iris Hineman, the "mother" of the Precrime Initiative. She explains to him that not all crimes may happen the exact same way that is seen by the Precogs. Sometimes, one of the psychics will see crime differently, possibly revealing the murder to not happen at all. These visions are dubbed minority reports and are believed to be the same visions happening all over again. Now, John Anderton time is running out and he must infiltrate the Precrime base and question one of the psychics in hopes of clearing his name and finding his minority report.

Steven Spielberg directing a film based on the short story "The Minority Report" by Philip K. Dick is a film made in heaven. Spielberg's craftiness molds this film into on of the best science fiction films ever and ranks next to the great Philip K. Dick adaptations such as Blade Runner and Total Recall. Minority Report was one of the best films of 2002 and was nominated and won several awards. These included an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound Editing, and four Saturn Awards, including Best Science Fiction Film and Best Direction. It was also a commercial success as well reeling in $358,372,926 worldwide at the box office on a budget of $102 million.

Tom Cruise is well cast as the vigilant but troubled officer of the Precrime Initiative, John Anderton. Not a day goes by where he wonders what his son would like like today is he had just kept a better on his son at the pool the day he was kidnapped and never found again. He also wonders everyday what he would do to the person who took his boy away from him. To dull the pain of loss he experiences regularly, he indulges himself in drugs; an act that if ever found out would mean the loss of his job and possible time in jail. Cruise just kicks ass every way you can think of in this gripping masterful piece of science fiction. His role may not be as iconic to him as Agent Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible or as the naval pilot LT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun, but here he just fits into the role seamlessly. After watching this you may gain respect for the man as an actor and causing you to forget the Scientology fanatic who jumps on couches on the Oprah Winfrey show.

John Anderton has immense faith in this precognitive crime system but that faith is not shared by Detective Danny Witwer played by Colin Farrell. Witwer is a cocky Department of Justice representative who is investigating whether there are possible flaws in the Precrime system. He believes there have always been flaws in the system and the one flaw he knows of for sure is that it is human. If he finds sufficient evidence of fallibility in Precrime, he will report back to his superiors and that will guarantee that Precrime will not go nation wide. Farrell is awesome as the man who ultimately tries to track down Anderton and route out the secrets of Precrime. Colin Farrell hasn't been better in anything else to date than his role in Minority Report.

Max Von Sydow portrays Director Lamar Burgess, the chief architect of the Precrime Initiative. He is an elderly man but is still adamant in his quest and dream of his advanced police department going national. The man knows more about Precrime more than anyone and that includes knowledge of its secrets. Von Sydow is just brimming with excellence in his role and he was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor. Neal McDonough doesn't disappoint as Fletcher, second in command next to Anderton of the Precrime Initiative. McDonough never disappoints in whatever role he is in and he is just awesome as the cop who will obey the law no matter what, even if he has to chase down his long time friend. Samantha Morton is Agatha, the lead Precog that has the strongest psychic abilities and assists John Anderton in his quest for his minority report. An interesting fact of the Precogs is that they are named after famed mystery writers; Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Dashiell Hammett. Lois Smith is Dr. Iris Hineman, a retired pioneer of the Precog Intiative who reveals to John the secret of the minority reports in one of the most mind blowing parts of the film's plot. Kathryn Morris is Lara, John's ex-wife who left him because she recognized her son all the time whenever she would be around her husband. Finally, Peter Stormare portrays Eddie Solomon a Swedish doctor who gives Anderton an eye transplant. Stormar worked with Spielberg in The Lost World: Jurassic Park and he gets his chance again to deliver a minor but serious and humorous performance. The entire supporting cast is great as Spielberg knows how to get the most out of his actors.

The special effects are hands down some of the best ever done in a film. Several years after this film's release, Minority Report wipes the floor with the majority of special effects movies spewing out of Hollywood's orifices these days. Like other great Philip K. Dick film adaptation such as Blade Runner and Total Recall, Minority Report boats its own unique and awe-inspiring visual style. Washed out, de-saturated colours gives a classic film noir feel to this futuristic high contrast Washington D.C. The action scenes are filled with mid-21st century technology that is both awesome and scary. Eye scanning is a regular occurrence whether you are being identified by spider-bots, walking onto a subway, or entering a store being shot with a personalized advertisement. Precrime officers fly thanks to jetpacks, carry handcuffs called "halos" that force the wearer to remain as stiff as a stone statue, and travel in huge squad transports. Washington D.C. has a very futuristic feel that is hard to believe it would really be that advanced in 2054. Highways travel every which way that have cars driving themselves going at immense speeds. The world seen here is scary but if technology only keeps getting better, our society will be like this one and eventually surpass it.

Every great science fiction film has themes and poses philosophical questions. The story deals with issues such as paranoia, the removal of personal liberty, and creeping but hidden totalitarianism. One question the film poses is if you knew you were going to commit a murder, would you still ultimately choose to do it? Foreknowledge and free will vs. determinism is poured out excellently in the film as John Anderton is going to meet someone he has never known, doesn't know what he did, but may end up killing him for a reason he doesn't even know yet. Coaching him to do otherwise is the all knowing Agatha who reminds him until the end that he always has a choice because of his God given free will. Free will isn't the same in this futuristic 2054 as it is in the first decade of the 2000s. Law enforcement has more power to go into people's lives so that they always know where they are and what they are doing when they need to know. A person's privacy is always being infiltrated when your eyes are scanned and hit with an advertisement every where you look in a public place. The more technology evolves, the more big brother is watching you to keep you safe but that doesn't mean that your life is going to be any more problem free than it may have been 10, 50, 100, or a 1000 years ago.

The bottom line for this film is that it should be watched and enjoyed by all movie watchers mature enough to handle it.

"Everybody runs..." - Chief John Anderton
